My Husband Demanded a Paternity Test & Got Mad When I Laughed in His Face at the Results

Sometimes, when babies are born, they don't look like their parents. There is so much at play when it comes to genetics, and even though we may expect to look at our baby's faces and think we are looking in the mirror, it doesn't always work out that way. Unless there is a genuine concern about cheating, most people just move on, and eventually the child starts to resemble the parents.

But sometimes, that's not the case. A woman and her husband just had a baby a few weeks ago. The husband questioned his wife's fidelity because he doesn't think the baby looks like him, and he demanded a paternity test. She posted in Reddit's AITA forum asking if she was wrong for laughing in his face when they got the results.

The couple have been married for two years.

The original poster is 27, and her husband is 28. They welcomed a daughter five weeks ago. But when the baby was born, she wasn't what her dad was expecting. The baby had light hair and eyes, but her parents both have dark hair and eyes.

"My husband freaked out at this and refused to listen to my explanation that, sometimes, babies are born with lighter hair and eyes that get darker over time. He demanded a paternity test and threatened to divorce me if I didn't comply, so I did," she explained.

This guy moved in with his parents while they awaited the results, and his mother called the OP and threatened her.

"My MIL called and informed me that if the paternity test revealed that the child wasn't his, she would do anything within her power to make sure that I was 'taken to the cleaners' during the divorce. I had my sister to lean on and help me take care of the baby during this," she wrote.

The results came in, and it was no big surprise to OP.

She knew her husband was the father, and the results proved that. She felt like the whole thing was a joke, and she laughed in his face and said, "I told you so." Shocker, he didn't like that and freaked out and ran back to his mom again.

She wrote, "two-three hours later, my MIL called to scold me about laughing in my husband's face, because apparently it was kicking him while he was down. She's also left a couple nasty texts essentially saying the same thing this morning. I don't think I'm an AH, but I'd like outsider perspective on this."

Redditors wanted to get rid of the mother-in-law first.

They think she had no business being in their business and needed to take a step back.

"Husband sounds very insecure and a momma's boy. He doesn't trust you. His family doesn't trust you," one person wrote. "Look how quickly they all turned against you, just because of the way the baby looked. They couldn't even wait for the test results before harassing you. What awful people they all are. Please get away from these people ASAP."

"NTA Block your husband's mommy. This does not concern her. Your marital issues are 100% none of her business," another person wrote.

"NTA. This MIL and son are not wearing red capes; they are wearing red flags. When someone shows you their true colors, believe them," someone else commented.

The vast majority want OP to run.

Although many people agreed that they aren't normally proponents of divorce, they want OP to get out of the situation as fast as she can.

"So are we laughing while serving him divorce papers? What's the move girl?" someone asked.

"NTA. Wow. I usually cringe at posts where the reddit mob say to split up but this is a case where that is totally warranted," another comment reads.

"Holy f-, whats wrong with you and why isnt he your ex? NTA," someone else asked.

Another person agreed, commenting, "I'm not one to normally jump to divorce but this is a divorce worthy offense. He's being emotionally and verbally abusive and allowing his mom to do the same. Instead of apologizing to you, groveling, and doing everything he could do to take accountability and prove he's a good husband, father, and man he berated and verbally abused you."

Redditors think OP deserves better.

This is a horrible situation, but Redditors believed it was best for OP to get out of a bad marriage now, rather than continue and cause more heartache for herself and her daughter. They just want OP and the baby to be safe and happy. Plus, they think OP deserves an apology.

"So 'he was down' by finding out that he was mistaken and you didn't actually get pregnant with someone else's child? Tough luck fella! He owes you a massive apology. Or three. Sorry about your husband and in-laws," one person commented.
