Rainbow hair is going over to the dark side, and it is glorious

Spring is just around the corner, and for many of us, that means it's time to bust out the pastel hair. But when you're a brunette, Easter egg hair can seem well out of your grasp — unless you want to bleach the shit out of your head for hours and deal with the damage. Um, no. So what's a dark-haired queen dreaming of rainbows to do?

Oil slick hair color, naturally.

Of course I don't mean having hair as greasy AS an oil slick — I stockpile dry shampoo to avoid that, thanks very much. This trend is all about taking the dark and mysterious iridescent colors swirling on top of an oil slick, and bringing them to your hair.

The key to this look is keeping the colors limited to cool shades only: we're talking blues, greens, and cool purples, maybe with a flash of magenta. Oil slick hair is meant to look dark most of the time, then flash with color when the light hits it. It's so beautiful that we've rounded up some of the most amazing oil slick hair color pictures to inspire you. After all, spring is the perfect time to change up your hair game.

Superstar makeup guru Michelle Phan embraced the oil slick color recently; we love the shades of copper incorporated here, too!

If permanent dye isn't your thing, temporary color can look just as gorgeous.

Kayva actually used Maybelline Color Tattoo Cream Eye Shadows ($7, Ulta) and they showed up beautifully on her dark hair.

And you can go subtle with these colors, too — keep the highlights underneath the first layer of your hair for maximum awesomeness.

But never shy away from the ultimate in drama!

Not feeling the super-rich colors? Lighter shades work well, too — just make sure they all stay in the cool-toned family!
