Colorism is nothing new, especially within the black community. It's relevant in Hollywood, as notable celebrities of color have been known to bleach their skin, and it's a constant discussion on social media platforms such as Twitter. It continues to be engrained in the beauty standards of many. However, as society progresses, more and more people are calling out those toxic ideals, and they're working to put an end to an ignorance that continues to plague society.
But unfortunately, there are still many who maintain those beliefs, and some of those people have huge platforms to spread and spew their self-hatred. Popular YouTube couple Biannca and Damien Prince are two of those people. Viewers were shocked to see the pair making colorist comments about their own newborn in a video that's nearing 2 million views, and the couple has been obliterated nonstop on Twitter for the past few days.
If you're not familiar with YouTubers the Prince Family, here's some background.
The popular duo with more than 3 million subscribers is one of the many widely watched millennial couples whose lives fans have become obsessed with. Their content consists of day-to-day vlogs, outrageous challenges, mukbangs, and every other click-worthy thing you can think of.
They also have three beautiful children, one of whom is a brand-new baby girl.
And while most parents would just be happy to have a healthy, full-term baby, Biannca and Damien clearly had other expectations. And of course, as YouTubers do, they documented the baby's birth. In a disgusting display of colorism and anti-blackness, the pair began analyzing the baby's appearance not even an hour after her birth.
In the video, you hear the pair noting the color of the newborn's ears and fingertips, making guesses that she'll be darker than her brothers. The conversation goes on for minutes and is so uncomfortable that the nurse chimes in to remind the couple that the baby is simply alive and well. Then it takes another ugly turn.
Biannca, who has grey eyes, proceeds to state that she thought her daughter would be "born with pretty eyes" like herself. Damien then begins to apologize for passing down his genes to his brown-eyed, brown-skinned infant.
We really can't make this stuff up.
As we all hoped they would, the couple has been getting dragged for days on social media.
As black girls are told enough by society that somehow we're not beautiful enough, the fact that the young baby will be facing that criticism from her own parents is nothing short of disgusting.
"Imagine being 1 hour old and your parents are obsessing over your skin/eye color The nurse had to remind them that she’s a beautiful baby," someone wrote.
People are legit wishing her the worst of luck.
And while we know the saying goes, "If you don't have anything nice to say, don't say it at all," this had to be done.
"Please refrain yourselves from putting forth all that energy bout that Bianca Prince girl. She's a colorist, and I wish her the worst and her baby the best. Next topic," wrote another who is clearly ready to cancel Biannca and her entire platform.
Biannca's responses to the matter were no better.
She really made no effort to clarify her statements; instead she took to the, "I'm black, and my kids are black" excuse as to somehow negate her colorist comments and ideals.
"lmao y’all people are funny. i threw no shade towards my baby in that video. it was our reaction to what she looks like. i never not once said I was mad," she wrote in defense of her video.
But this isn't the first time Biannca has made colorist comments, and Twitter dug up the receipts.
In an old "smash or pass" video, Biannca is seen in shock after her husband spoke highly of singer Ciara. In reaction, the half-black YouTuber responded that she didn't know her husband liked black girls, as seen from this tweet.
But aren't you black, too, Biannca? At least that's the excuse you've been using this time.
The Prince Family's reign might be coming to an end.
The last thing any of us need to do is continue to give ignorant people such as the Prince Family a platform to continue to spread their outdated and outright disrespectful views. Our biggest hope, however, is that this self-hate isn't passed down to their children.
"I used to watch Damien and Bianca when they did reactions. I stopped when I discovered they’re both colorist and antiblack trash. And horrible parents and scammers as well," someone said.
Prince family, do better.
