An Open Letter to My Real COVID Valentine: My BFF

I’ve always fancied my bestie and me platonic life partners. While we’ve never officially taken vows, they are inferred.

For instance, we both agree that we will treat each other’s kids as our own and “like” every picture each other posts on instagram.

We know to always answer on the first ring when the other calls. Obviously, only really pressing matters deserve an actual call when we both prefer texts or Marco Polo. If the phone rings, we pick up. ALWAYS.

We’ve always been there for each other, had each other’s backs. Hated who the other hated. Supported each other through awkward phases, fat phases, depressed phases, and amazing phases.

But 2020 was a test we did not see coming

“Don’t sweat it,” you said. “Tomorrow is a new day"

When you endured an entire pregnancy in virtual lockdown and felt the loss of all the fun parts of expecting a baby like dressing cute, shopping and baby showers, I begged for bump photos, brainstormed baby names and threw you a virtual celebration.

When I cussed out the world because the tropical family vacation I’d been planning for over a year was canceled, you helped me brainstorm fun summer activities and promised a girl’s trip when we’re 40.

And when you faced the loss of your dad in a time when his life could not be adequately celebrated, I cried with you and remembered funny stories and important memories.

This last year was a mess

This last year was hard as hell.

But you, my sweet bestie Valentine, made it so much less sucky.

I wish I could shower you with presents. Not flowers or chocolate, obviously, but gifts that you would actually like — unlimited message gift card, a regular house cleaner or 24/7 meal delivery service, to name a few.

But for now, just know that I am eternally grateful for us.

You + Me = Forever
