But where do you start? Pinterest and Instagram have proven there are endless nursery color schemes to choose from, and while it’s fun to look at totally outrageous, over-the-top nurseries, that’s not reality for most parents.

If you ask us, the best place to start is by choosing a color. Find a color that speaks to you and go from there. From pink to black and everything in between, here are nine nursery inspirations by color to help you get started.

Gender-neutral nursery colors

Nursery colors for boys

For parents looking to create a more traditionally “masculine” space for their baby, you may want to consider the following nursery colors for boys.

7. Blue
When you think of a boy’s room, you tend to think of blue. After all, there’s a reason why the color is called “baby blue!” This classic option for little boys is deeply calming and helps promote a restful sleep for fussy babies. “[The color blue] invokes a sense of the body cooling, which helps when children fall asleep,” explained Chambers. “It's worth being mindful of the tone; too dark can become almost gloomy and uninspiring, but too pale reduces some of the benefits.”

8. Dark Green
While a light green can be very gender neutral, a darker green is more commonly associated with a boy’s nursery. For parents wishing to create a more masculine space that adopts the positive attributes of green, a dark green (like a hunter) would make for a great choice.

9. Brown or Tan
A brown and/or tan nursery lends itself to a very rustic, woodland vibe. Whether you’re designing a boy’s nursery or wanting to create a nature-inspired nursery, selecting a brown or tan color for the walls would be a great place to start.
