When Daniel Hernandez-Lopez’s mugshot began to circulate online, his face shocked many people. In the photo, Hernandez-Lopez has two black eyes, an extremely swollen lip, and dried blood on his nose and forehead. His injuries look pretty painful, but it’s how he reportedly got them that might really shock you. Hernandez-Lopez, 37, apparently thought it was OK to attack his wife. His 13-year-old stepson disagreed and allegedly punched him several times to thwart the attack.
Police reportedly arrived at a wild scene.

According to a news release obtained by WEAR, deputies from the Baldwin County Sheriff’s Office got a call about a domestic dispute around 8:20 p.m. on March 9, 2026. When they arrived, they reportedly found a 13-year-old boy subduing a badly beaten Hernandez-Lopez. The boy apparently used a bicycle to subdue his stepdad while he waited for the police.
Hernandez-Lopez had an argument with his wife.
The unnamed woman told deputies she and her husband had an argument that quickly turned violent. He reportedly grabbed his wife around her neck and began to choke her, WEAR reported. The woman’s son wasn’t going to let that happen to his mom, so he jumped in to defend her.
“Once the child was outside, Daniel Hernandez -Lopez, exited the residence following his stepson and attempted to violently engage him in the front yard,” the sheriff’s office reported. “During this altercation, the stepson was able to defend himself and struck his father in the face numerous times, subduing him until deputies could arrive.”
The man was treated at the scene.
Medics helped dress Hernandez-Lopez’s numerous wounds at the scene, but that didn’t stop him from going to jail. According to WEAR, he was in the United States illegally. Police took him to the Baldwin County Corrections Center on a $30,000 bond for an immigration hold.
Seeing the boy defend his mom stirred up mixed emotions.
Luke Mandela posted about the incident on Facebook, and some appreciated what the boy did for his mom.
“Don’t mess with the boys mom sheshhh!!! He will really do some damage,” someone wrote. “love that.”
“I’m glad that boy stepped up to the plate and handled business. Our balls call the shots, “another person agreed.
“I can only imagine how scared and fed up that child must have been,” a follower praised. “That boy is a hero.”
Others found the story upsetting because this poor kid had to deal with violence in what sounds like a pretty unstable home.
“This is so sad for the young boy. Imagine the trauma he has to face alone on top of possibly guilt. He did the right thing but as a 13 year old, you’re still developing your emotional intelligence. Praying for his peace and healing,” someone wrote.
We know that violence isn’t the answer, but it sounds like this adult started it. The boy’s mom could have been killed if he hadn’t jumped in. If the worst thing this kid ever does is defend his mom against a violent creep, he’s in pretty good shape.
