Police in Michigan got an unexpected and potentially deadly surprise while at a home in Battle Creek on January 25, 2025. A police cadet arrived at a house on Inn Road just before 10 a.m. to serve a subpoena. Shockingly, a 5-year-old child allegedly answered the door while holding a large kitchen knife. But the child’s next move was even more disturbing.

According to a release from the Battle Creek Police Department, the cadet asked the child to get an adult. Instead, the 5-year-old allegedly returned with a loaded handgun. Thankfully, the cadet disarmed the child, and everyone stayed safe. The cadet called for backup, and patrol officers made their way to the home.
“Once road patrol officers arrived, two adult males and one adult female were located inside the residence, detained, and transported to the police department for questioning,” according to police.
Sadly, multiple children lived in the home. “Due to the handgun and the deplorable condition of the home, five children – ranging from 8 years old to 6 months old – were turned over to Child Protective Services. LifeCare Ambulance transported one of the children to Bronson Battle Creek Hospital and then later to a hospital in Kalamazoo due to health concerns,” police reported.
Police did not identify the adults at the home, but WOOD spoke to the father of the woman who was arrested. The unidentified man said his daughter lived with the father of one of her children and another man. One of the men allegedly beat his daughter earlier in January, according to her dad.
“She was a single mother with five kids trying to do the best that she can after what happened with her baby’s daddy throwing all of the kids’ stuff out and everything and having to scrape through the snow to find them,” the dad told WOOD. “They tore the house up on the inside, smashed everything, everything was smashed on the floor.”

Battle Creek police confirmed to WOOD that they arrested a man at the home for domestic violence on January 12.
The woman’s father expressed his frustration with the situation but told the news outlet he wants his family back together and safe.
“I love my daughter, I love my grandkids, I want to see everyone back together as a family, that’s all,” he said.
