In March 2023, a court convicted Alex Murdaugh in the June 2021 shooting deaths of his wife, Maggie Murdaugh, and son Paul Murdaugh. Murdaugh came from a very powerful family in Hampton County, South Carolina, but even his family’s name couldn’t keep him out of prison for the rest of his life. He was sentenced to two consecutive life sentences for the murders of his wife and son. On May 13, 2026, the South Carolina Supreme Court overturned the convictions and granted Murdaugh a new murder trial. Although this may seem like a victory for Murdaugh, he’s not getting out of prison.
The South Carolina Supreme Court felt Murdaugh deserved a new trial.
According to CNN, the court determined Murdaugh’s 2021 trial was marred by the “improper” influence of the county clerk, Becky Hill.
“Although we are aware of the time, money, and effort expended for this lengthy trial, we have no choice but to reverse the denial of Murdaugh’s motion for a new trial due to Hill’s improper external influences on the jury and remand for a new trial,” according to justices.
Murdaugh’s attorneys praised the court’s decision.
Murdaugh’s attorneys, Dick Harpootlian and Jim Griffin, shared a statement thanking the court for accepting the appeal on behalf of their client, WYFF reported.
“We respect the decision that made clear that the retrial must look very different from the first. The initial jury heard more than twelve hours of testimony about Alex’s financial crimes. The Court held that this evidence went far beyond what was necessary and gave rise to unfair prejudice,” the statement reads. “On retrial, that will not be permitted. Alex has said from day one that he did not kill his wife and son. We look forward to a new trial conducted consistent with the Constitution and the guidance this Court has provided.”
Not everyone shares Murdaugh’s team’s excitement.
South Carolina Attorney General Alan Wilson shared his disappointment with the decision in a statement obtained by WYFF.
“While we respectfully disagree with the Court’s decision, my Office will aggressively seek to retry Alex Murdaugh for the murders of Maggie and Paul as soon as possible. Let me be clear—this decision does not mean Murdaugh will be released,” Wilson shared. “He will remain in prison for his financial crimes. No one is above the law and, as always, we will continue to fight for justice.”
In April 2024, a court sentenced Murdaugh, then 55, to 40 years in prison for financial crimes as a personal injury attorney. Murdaugh worked for Peters, Murdaugh, Parker, Eltzroth & Detrick, a firm founded by his great-grandfather.
It’s unlikely Murdaugh will ever see the other side of a prison yard, but he could technically be cleared of murdering his wife and son. This case is giving OJ Simpson. Only one person knows the truth and will likely take the story to his grave.
