‘Our Hearts Are Broken’: 6-Year-Old Nonverbal, Autistic Boy Found Unresponsive in Neighbor’s Pool

Joshua Nizigiyimana disappeared from his family home in Granger, Indiana, on the evening of June 20, 2025. The St. Joseph’s County Police Department responded to call about a missing 6-year-old boy believed to be autistic and nonverbal around 8:40 p.m. The search for Joshua began, and he was found unresponsive in a neighbor’s pool a short time later.

According to a news release from police, emergency responders began lifesaving measures but could not revive Joshua. EMS transported Joshua to an area hospital, where personnel pronounced him dead.

“Our hearts are with the Nizigiyimana family as they endure an unimaginable loss. We also extend our support to the neighbors, community members, our officers, and all first responders involved in this heartbreaking case,” Sheriff Redman shared in the release.

Per his obituary, Joshua was the oldest of three children and a kindergarten student. “Joshua loved music, especially playing the drums and he loved flowers. He loved to play with tennis balls, jumping on the trampoline and always liked to play on the playground on the slides,” his obituary reads.

The Horizon Elementary PTO created a fundraiser for Joshua’s family in the wake of his sudden death.

“Our hearts are broken as we mourn the loss of sweet Joshua, a beloved student of our school community. We’ve created a donation page to support the Nizigiyimana family during this incredibly difficult time,” the PTO shared.

Many left kind words and condolences for Joshua’s family on the PTO’s Facebook page.

“I was his bus driver this year, such a sweet young boy and he was quite the character! Rest in piece Joshua,” a comment reads.

“How sad he looks like such a sweet young man,” another person wrote. “I will keep the family in my prayers this is really heartbreaking.”
