Baby Abandoned in Shopping Bag on Bronx Doorstep: See the Video

Surrendering a newborn baby to a stranger is something parents do out of desperation. Thankfully, this can be done safely (and legally) at a fire station, hospital, law enforcement agency, or Safe Haven Baby Box. Despite these safety measures, recently a baby was abandoned in a shopping bag on a Bronx doorstep.

New York City police officers are seeking information after a newborn was discovered crying, cold, and alone. Video footage of a woman carrying the bag with the baby inside has since been released to the public. After making an arrest, investigators are piecing together what happened.

In late December, a baby was abandoned in a shopping bag in the Bronx.

About 6 a.m. December 29, a crying newborn was discovered in front of a home in the Bronx, ABC 7 New York reported. The baby was wrapped in a blanket inside the bag at home on Reverend James Polite Avenue. Now, police are searching for answers.

A video shows a woman dropping off the infant.

In the wake of the baby’s discovery, police released a surveillance video of a person wanted for questioning. Footage shows a woman walking back and forth at 5:36 a.m. before entering a driveway and leaving the shopping bag with the baby on a doorstep. Afterward, she walked away in the direction from which she came.

Reportedly, a man who lives nearby rescued the baby.

A man who was passing by the area apparently heard the baby crying. He then called another man, Mamadou Hafiz Jallow, who lives nearby but was at his mosque. After running home, Jallow found the child.

Jallow recalled calling 911 and making sure the baby was warm.

“I called 911, it was cold, I put the baby inside. I didn’t want to mess with any evidence, but it was too cold, I had to take the baby from outside,” Jallow told ABC 7 . “It’s amazing, I never thought something like this would happen in my life, but you know it’s life.”

The baby girl was brought to Jacobi Medical Center and is doing well, CBS News reported.

Since police released the footage, a 26-year-old woman has been arrested.

Delfina Galvez, 26, has since been arrested, the Bronx Times reported. She faces a first-degree reckless endangerment charge as well as abandonment of a child and acting in a manner injurious to a child, according to police. She reportedly lives near the location where she left the newborn and will be arraigned on December 31, according to ABC 7 .
