A 7-month-old baby died in a bathtub, and it appears his mother left the child unattended. Edith Estrada-Sigala, 28, reportedly called 911 on March 3, 2025, to report her baby boy unresponsive. Albuquerque Fire Rescue arrived at the home on San Pablo Street and attempted life-saving measures on the baby. Tragically, they could not resuscitate him. The Albuquerque Police Department arrived on the scene a short time later and began interviewing Estrada-Sigala, who allegedly gave conflicting details.
According to KAOT, the mother reportedly told police her baby boy had pneumonia for three weeks, and she placed him down for a nap. When she checked on him later in the day, the child was unresponsive. But as the interview continued, her story reportedly changed.

KAOT reported that the mother then told police she was tired from work and fell asleep with the water running while giving the baby a bath. She also told police she had taken an older child to school before returning home with the baby that morning.
When police searched the home, they reportedly found several bottles of alcohol. Estrada-Sigala allegedly admitted to drinking around 10 a.m. after putting her baby down for a nap. She and the infant awoke around noon, and she decided to give him a bath.
Estrada-Sigala allegedly left the baby unattended in the bath to do laundry and then went to lie down. She reportedly had no intention of falling asleep, but she did.
ABQ Raw reported that Estrada-Sigala’s mother attempted to contact her daughter several times during the day but got no response. She eventually went to her apartment and woke Estrada-Sigala around 5 p.m. When Estrada-Sigala’s mother asked about the baby, she allegedly told her she thought he was in his bassinet. Sadly, she found him blue and unresponsive in the bathtub.

Per ABQ Raw, Estrada-Sigala allegedly admitted to police she drank frequently and had a problem with alcohol. Police say she also told them she’d left her son in the bathtub alone in the past while doing housework.
Police arrested the mother, and she’s now facing a charge of child abuse, resulting in death.
The story has shocked the community, and many have shared their feelings on ABQ Raw’s Facebook page.

Even though Her little baby deserved better, deserved a life. She’s 7m postpartum, probably already so exhausted, and then recklessly drinking on top of that. I feel for her, attack me if you will. I don’t believe she’s a monster or someone who should go to jail. Her error will haunt her. However all I know is what is written in this article.”
