The last time anyone saw Michelle Rust was on July 20, 2002. The 24-year-old mother was planning for her 3-year-old son’s birthday party when she reportedly disappeared from her Baltimore County, Maryland home. Her husband, Dwight Rust Jr., told police his wife left their home to get supplies for the party, yet no one could ever prove she went anywhere. More than two decades later, on April 20, 2026, police arrested Rust in connection with his wife’s mysterious disappearance.
Rust initially reported his wife missing.
According to a release from the Baltimore County Police Department, Rust contacted police around 3 p.m. the day of his wife’s disappearance. He reportedly told officers she left around 9:30 a.m. and he had not seen or heard from her again. Both law enforcement and loved ones searched for Michelle but had no luck. Her father-in-law reportedly found her van a few blocks away with a key broken off in the door, but there was no sign of the young mother.
The disappearance seemed suspicious from the very beginning.
The Baltimore County Police Department explained in another news release that it seemed Michelle Rust just disappeared without a trace. She had no movement in her bank accounts, her personal property could not be found, and no one saw her leave her home. Investigators received no solid leads after offering a $12,000 reward, which only fueled suspicion that she didn’t just run away.
“Family members say that Michelle Rust loved her three-year-old son, and would not have disappeared on her own, leaving the child behind. She is also a diabetic and dependent on insulin. This adds more weight to the conclusion that she has been the victim of foul play,” investigators noted in the release.
Rust might have had an affair.
During Rust’s bail hearing, Assistant Attorney General Jacey Sheckells suggested he was having an affair at the time of Michelle’s death and intended to leave her, CBS News reported. The husband allegedly hid that affair from law enforcement in 2022, according to Sheckells. Rust’s attorney denied the allegations.
“If the motive is Dwight Rust Jr. having an affair, you need more than that,” said Rust’s attorney, Jeremy Eldridge, per CBS News. “For instance, there’s no prior history of domestic violence, there’s no allegations he ever threatened her, or caused any physical harm, or even verbally abused her.”
Eldridge is confident his client is not only innocent but can prove it to the court. “I am ready to try this case tomorrow. I wish we could get a courtroom even faster,” the attorney said. “We will win this case in court.”
Rust faces a first-degree murder charge.
From the looks of his social media, he’s lived a very full life since Michelle Rust been gone. It will be very interesting to see if he really had anything to do with her disappearance.
