A Chicago mother has reportedly confessed to killing her toddler and has blamed the crime on the voices in her head. Marisol Vazquez, 37, reportedly drowned her young daughter, Lucia, in a bathtub on December 20, 2024. When officers from the Chicago Police Department came to the woman’s home, Vazquez reportedly made incoherent statements, prompting a mental health evaluation.
Sadly, when officers found Lucia in the home, her body was cold to the touch and she was unresponsive. Vazquez allegedly made shocking statements to police regarding her daughter that eventually led to her arrest in connection with Lucia’s death.

Police responded to a call about a potential drowning.
According to court documents obtained by CBS News, when Chicago PD arrived at the home on December 20, they found Vazquez and Lucia naked on a bed. When paramedics attempted to revive Lucia, water began to leave her mouth. While investigating, the police reportedly found a bathtub full of water and clogged with clothing.
Investigators asked the mother what happened.
According to CBS News, when detectives questioned Vazquez, she made “incoherent statements about being trapped by electronics and that everyone has been raped.” She allegedly added, “We had to go in the water. We had to be with nature.”
Vazquez went to an area hospital for a mental health evaluation.
Prior to her arrest, emergency responders took Vazquez to Ascension St. Mary Hospital for a mental health check, CBS News reported. During questioning at the hospital, Vazquez allegedly confessed. She reportedly said, “that the voices were in her head and that the voices told her that she needs to kill herself with her daughter in order for the devil not to eat her daughter.”

Vazquez reportedly attempted suicide after killing Lucia.
Vazquez told police she tried to drown herself but was unable to do so, per CBS News. Instead, she began to cut herself. Police arrested her while at the hospital on a charge of first-degree murder.
Online records show law enforcement took her to Cook County Jail on January 4. She was being held without bond and has a court date scheduled for January 7, 2025.
