Child-Free Woman’s Costco Rant About Kids in Public Sparks Parental Fury & a Hasty Apology

We all live for a good social media rant. They can be cathartic and pretty darn informative. But, they can also trigger others if the rant isn’t met by the appropriate audience. A TikTok user named Brightyn learned this lesson quickly in early February, when she posted a rant about families at Costco. Brightyn, who posts as @brightynsletten, was apparently aggravated about shopping at the warehouse club among parents and their children. She took her thoughts to social media, and it promptly backfired. It seems parents don’t really want to hear about how to raise children from someone who doesn’t have any.

Brightyn eventually took down her original TikTok but not before it reached the masses. Per the New York Post, the since-deleted TikTok video began with Brightyn yelling, “Why do we have to go to Costco with the whole family? Why are mom and dad and three frickin’ kids here?”

Her words ignited a firestorm among parents. TikTok user @thisismyonlypage shared a stitch captioned, “Girly, this should have stayed in the drafts.”

She explained that, as a mom, she’s tired of people telling her that children aren’t allowed out of the house. She suggested Brightyn get over herself and use a delivery service instead.

A few days later, Brightyn took to TikTok herself to apologize for her rant. She explained that she had a bad experience at Costco and didn’t mean to offend families the way she did. Brightyn added that not all Costco families are bad, even though that’s how it sounded.

“I’m sorry Costco families. I didn’t realize that Costco was such a sacred time for families, and I’m glad that families have their different ways of spending time,” she said in the clip.

Brightyn added, “I’m sure 99.9% of people’s kids and families are great at Costco, there’s just always that 1% where they let their kids run amok.”

Her apology did not sit well with TikTokers. Many felt her words sounded insincere. One wrote, “This was such an unapologetic apology lol.”

Another commenter asked Brightyn a great question: “Am I supposed to leave my child alone at home to go shopping? My husband and I both pick things out at the store. It’s so weird to hear non parents commenting on stuff they have no idea about, lol.”

And this mom left a nice mic drop on the post, writing, “I take my children with me everywhere cause I’m like…. Their mom.”
