When Natalie Despain went to pick up her 5-year-old son from a visitation with his father, Benjamin Despain, on December 2, 2025, no one was home. This greatly concerned the Utah mother, who contacted police. She feared Benjamin Despain was on the run with their young son, and she wanted him back home. Natalie Despain and Benjamin Despain apparently had opposing opinions on medical care for their son, and it seemed the father’s solution was to run away. As the days passed, James’ loved ones began to fear the worst.
Per ABC 4, Natalie Despain said Benjamin Despain allegedly contacted her via email and said he was taking their son “away” to avoid an upcoming adenoid removal surgery. She also claimed he has a history of mental illness and domestic violence.
Two days after Benjamin Despain failed to return James, Natalie Despain shared an urgent plea on social media.
“My son, James, was kidnapped by his non-custodial father on Tuesday. We are doing all we can to locate them- they have a camping trailer and are driving a 2006 Red Toyota Tacoma . Last seen in Bountiful Utah. They could be driving back East to famous LDS church sites,” she wrote. “They could be camping in Idaho or around there. PLEASE PLEASE call the police if you see them! James is 5 and he’s 3’11” and 47 pounds. Thank you in advance. I won’t be able to answer calls and texts immediately- unless you are the cops, FBI or my lawyer, please don’t be offended.”
Thousands shared the post, as police focused on finding the father and son. On December 6, the community received the news they’d hoped for. Bountiful City Police announced Benjamin Despain’s arrest and James’ safe return to his mother.
“I think it’s important to share these to balance out all the negativity,” one person shared. “Thank you for keeping us safe, and for your service!” another follower agreed.
Thank goodness for a happy ending, especially so close to Christmas. May this father get the help he needs.
