Dad & Daughter Die After Eating Curry Made With Poisonous Mushrooms

A family in Thailand is mourning the loss of two of their loved ones. Tragically, a dad and daughter both died after eating a meal together because they didn’t realize that the mushrooms used to prepare their curry were actually poisonous. The family prepared the mushroom curry at home using mushrooms given to them by a friend.

Boonpan, 78, and his daughter, Wijitra, 40, ate the mushroom curry on August 22, 2025, reported the Daily Mail. After consuming the curry, Boonpan started showing extremely concerning symptoms, including foaming at the mouth and convulsing. Relatives went to check on Wijitra and found her unconscious. Both Boonpan and Wijitra were taken to the hospital, but unfortunately, they didn’t survive.

Other members of the family survived because they had not consumed the curry yet. Wijitra’s older sister, Thatsanee, explained that her sister didn’t normally consume mushrooms and had no idea that the mushrooms a friend had given her were dangerous. Assuming they were safe to eat, she asked her mother to use them to make a curry.

“My sister had never cooked with this type of mushroom before because she didn’t usually like mushrooms,” Thatsanee said. “This was the first time. A friend gave her some, so she asked our mother to make them into a curry and even shared some with relatives, but they hadn’t cooked theirs yet.”

After facing this unimaginable tragedy, Thatsanee has no plans to continue eating mushrooms. “I love mushrooms, but after what happened, I will never touch them again,” she said. “It’s difficult to tell which ones are poisonous.”

Per Cleveland Clinic, unless you’re a mushroom expert, it can be really difficult to distinguish between safe mushrooms and toxic ones. Some types of poisonous mushrooms can look similar to those you’d find at the grocery store. For this reason, the medical center urges people to buy mushrooms at the grocery store and to be skeptical of mushrooms collected by anyone who is not an expert.
