What to Know
Sometimes, we all need an influencer to stand up and say what the little guy can’t. Or, what no one will hear because the little guy doesn’t have millions of followers on social media and nowhere near the reach than influencers do. When an influencer dad on TikTok, Deric Cahill, posted a video shaming Lovesac for the many packages that his modular couch came in, he didn’t know it at the time, but he spoke for tons of other people who have had to deal with such headaches.
Then, Lovesac responded to the video with a couple of snarky uploads. And now, people are taking sides. Well, they are mostly taking Deric’s side, because for them, all he did was call out the difficulties of putting together a sofa after paying thousands for it and receiving no less than 12 packages with the sections of said sofa.
The influencer dad was honest in his review of the couch.

A lot of Deric’s content is sarcastic and relies on the harsh or comedic realities of parenthood in an entertaining way. He also often jokes about his relationship with his wife. So when he dons small gloves in the video to assemble the Lovesac, it seems more like a funny way to deal with the stress of assembling. Sofa that he did not realize would come in so many separate boxes.
“We just got our new couch delivered and the only thing I have to say is, are you sh-tting me?” Deric says in the video. “This feels like corporate f–king terrorism. Were they coming up with the business idea like, you know what we should do? Charge a f–king s–tload of money for our couches and then make everyone be factory workers. Ha ha ha ha! I love that idea. We should. We should call it Lovesac because they can suck our f–king balls.”
He then explains how his Lovesac was sent to him in several packages and how he has struggled to not only get them open, but to put together his sectional.
The Lovesac couch is known as one that can be customized. That’s why some families love it. It’s also pricy, with some of the least expensive options coming in at around $3,000. If Deric’s couch came in what appears to be at least a dozen boxes, he probably paid a pretty penny for it. So, whether it’s customary or not to have to put it together, it still might feel like a lot for some customers, including Deric.
“For the price they charge, someone should come and put it together for you,” one person commented on Deric’s video. “Just saying.”
“IKEA did this first but at least you know what you’re getting into. And it’s not $7,000,” someone else wrote.
Another wrote, “My wife has been trying to talk me into one of these. Your video will be the shield I use to prevent ever owning one of these.”
A delivery driver even commented to back up Deric and wrote, “As a FedEx loader, these always ruined my day.”
Lovesac’s CEO posted a response that was later deleted.

Things might have cooled down afterward if Lovesac had issued an apology for the apparent communication issue with how involved the sofa assembly would be. But instead, CEO Shawn Nelson reportedly posted and then deleted a snarky response video for Deric.
In the video that was screen recorded but not on the CEO’s TikTok account, he jokes about Deric using “size small” gardening gloves to put together the Lovesac and asks if his wife was “horny” when she saw the Lovesac Deric put together himself.
“Derek, as predicted, our attorneys have reviewed your submission and determined that you are, in fact, entitled to compensation,” he says in the video. “As such, we will be sending you a new pair of size small floral print garden gloves to mitigate your losses.”
Then, people commented on his other videos to ask where the Potently deleted one went before Shawn seemingly put the video back up. For some, Lovesac really dropped the ball with this one.
“Yeah that was so insanely inappropriate to post,” someone commented. “WTH is wrong with him?”
Another added, “I think mocking and degrading your customers is definitely the way to improve profits, but let’s check the stocks…”
Shawn posted another video where he explains the content Lovesac put out after Deric’s videos as in an effort to match his own snarky humor. But there’s no getting around the drama that people are watching play out on the platform.
Lovesac posted an ad making fun of the dad.

The official Lovesac account on TikTok posted a video after Deric shared his on the platform. The video doesn’t mention him by name or even feature an actor who looks like him. But the timing, and the content, which involves a woman declaring how easy it is and how she didn’t need tools or “tiny little gloves” to do it, seem to be a clear dig at Deric.
For now, there doesn’t seem to be an official resolution to what happened or where Deric stands with the brand now. But I doubt he will be getting any partnership deals with Lovesac any time soon.
