A typical Monday morning near a Michigan school bus stop took a terrifying turn in a quiet neighborhood on April 13, 2026. A 16-year-old girl was reportedly abducted by a stranger just after 7 a.m. The unidentified man brazenly grabbed her in front of multiple witnesses. Though the man allegedly pointed a gun at the teenager, he did not thwart her bravery. When they stopped at a gas station a short time later, the teen did something incredible that likely saved her life.
The alleged kidnapper apparently needed a nicotine fix.
The alleged abduction took place near Edwin and Brombach streets in Hamtramck as the girl went to catch her bus to Frontier International Academy, WXYZ reported. About 30 minutes later, the suspect took the teenager into a Sunoco gas station in Detroit to get cigarettes. As he asked the girl to pay for them, she very subtly let the store clerk know she needed assistance.
“When he ask her to pay for the cigarettes, I stop and go, there’s something wrong. And she mouthed talked to me, like with no sound, ‘help,'” Abdulrahman Abohatem told WXYZ.
He told the news outlet he immediately stepped out from behind the counter’s protective glass to help the terrified teen. “I go out, I kick him out, I ask the girl go behind me,” Abohatem said.
Police were already on the scene.
Quick-thinking students who had seen the girl get into the suspect’s vehicle earlier used social media to track her location. That helped police find her and get her to safety quickly.
“Several students witnessed the incident and were able to help track the student’s location through social media and cell phone information,” Hamtramck Public Schools Board of Education President Abdulmalik Algahaim shared on social media. “Police were contacted immediately. Officers located the vehicle, conducted a stop, and the suspect was taken into custody.”
The teen girl likely escaped a very dangerous situation.
Hamtramck Police Chief Hussein Farhat addressed the media during a news conference and called this kidnapping a crime of “opportunity.” He added that the 16-year-old just happened to be in the right place at the right time for the suspect.
Mayor Adam Alharbi said he wants a change in how criminals are punished. He added that the suspect has a history of violent crimes.
“It’s a criminal who had a history of rape charges, and we will make sure that he gets what he deserves,” Alharbi said, per WXYZ.
Alharbi said he has compassion for the family. “I feel bad for the family, and we will make sure that this incident doesn’t happen again, and the city of Detroit needs to step it up. The court system needs to make sure that they do punish these criminals, especially with rape issues,” he asserted during the news conference.
Although we often bemoan teenagers and their constant use of cellphones, this time, it paid off and likely saved a friend from something truly horrible. We also have to give credit to the brave victim and observant store clerk who worked together to help get her to safety. We all know smoking is bad for you, but in this teenager’s case, it might have saved her life.
