Driver Unknowingly Kills 7-Year-Old Boy Who Crawled Under a Truck To Grab a Ball

The family of a 7-year-old Louisiana boy is grieving after he died while playing ball. Kaiden Marley Coke was playing in a private parking lot in Bienville Parish in northwest Louisiana when a driver unknowingly ran over him. Police arrived, and Kaiden was pronounced dead.

His death is under investigation, but it is believed that it was just a tragic accident that changed the lives of many in a split second.

Kaiden reportedly crawled under the truck.

Kaiden’s ball rolled under a 2011 Dodge Ram truck that was backed into a parking space, according to a release from the Louisiana State Police. Evidently, he didn’t realize anyone was in the truck and crawled underneath it.

The driver of the truck also apparently didn’t know Kaiden had gone under the vehicle and put it into drive, subsequently hitting and killing the child.

The driver did not appear impaired.

Per police, the driver, who wasn’t injured or identified, submitted to routine toxicology tests, though they are not expected to return positive results.

“As our Troopers work to ensure the safety of our roadways, investigating fatal crashes remains a top priority. Dealing with the aftermath of a fatal crash is always challenging, particularly when children are involved," the media release reads. "While each crash is unique, there are essential safety measures that can greatly reduce the risk of tragic crashes as we head into warmer weather.”

Police urged parents to educate their children.

Sadly, these types of accidents happen more often than we would hope, and children die every day. The Louisiana State Police implored parents to talk to their children about safe play.

“It is crucial to educate children on the importance of never playing near or around cars and trucks. Always make it a habit to walk around your vehicle and thoroughly check the surrounding area before reversing. Avoid solely relying on detection devices, as they may not always be foolproof," the release reads.

"Encourage your children to stand to the side of the driveway or sidewalk so they are clearly visible to you when backing out," it continues. "Furthermore, when driving through residential areas, it is imperative to be extra cautious and attentive. Keep a watchful eye out for children, reduce your speed, and remain vigilant at all times. By following these safety tips, we can all play a role in preventing tragic crashes and keeping our communities safe.”

Kaiden’s family is raising money for his final expenses.

His brother, Damien Coke, created a GoFundMe account for the family. They hope to honor his memory with the help of others.

“Kaiden was silly and filled with joy and we want him to be remembered properly. He was seven years old and had so much love and joy to spread and we didn’t have insurance on him so if you could help us we would greatly appreciate it,” he wrote on the fundraising page.

Loved ones have shown great support.

The GoFundMe page has raised $6,500 of a $2,000 goal. Donors left words of encouragement for Kaiden’s family.

Someone wrote, “Know with no insurance how it could wear on a family compounded on the lost of a child ! My prayers will be with you and your family …. God Bless!!!”

“prayers and comfort for all of this little man’s family and friends,” another person offered.

Others offered heartfelt support and prayers.

“My heart goes out to you. Know that others care and know the hurt in your heart. I pray that God reaches down and eases your pain," another comment reads.
