Father of 2 Shot & Killed After Daughter Touched Neighbor’s Mulch While on a Family Walk

A father of two lost his life senselessly while out for a walk with his family. Nathan Morris, of Canton, Michigan, was walking with his wife and two daughters when he was confronted by his neighbor, Devereaux Christopher Johnson.

Johnson was reportedly upset that Morris’ daughter “touched his mulch.” The two men got into an argument. In the middle of the confrontation, Johnson “took out a gun and started threatening the family.”

Morris tried to defuse the situation.

Morris sent his family home as he attempted to calm the situation, the Michigan GOP, of which Morris was a member, reported on X. Instead, Johnson allegedly shot and killed him. Prosecutors claim that Johnson shot Morris several times, reported the New York Post. Morris was reportedly unarmed.

When police arrived on the scene, they found Morris in the street with a gunshot wound. Meanwhile, Johnson had barricaded himself in his home.

It took several attempts before Johnson surrendered.

Police said Morris was taken to the hospital where he later died. Police ordered Johnson to surrender several times. Eventually, he came out of his home, repeatedly saying, “Praise to God Almighty.” He was arrested and charged with first-degree murder and other felonies.

This is not the first time Johnson has had an altercation with his neighbors and the police.

This is not the first time Johnson has had a run in with his neighbors officials told Fox 2 Detroit. During the 12 years he lived in the neighborhood, he assaulted other neighbors and even police officers. He also had a criminal history. In the 1990s, he had criminal sexual conduct charges.

Johnson will sit for a competency hearing.

Johnson is being held without bond. A not guilty plea was entered on his behalf. The prosecutor’s office is asking for a competency hearing for Johnson. He is set to appear in court on August 23.
