What to Know
Are you someone who continually gravitates towards easy lunches? Perhaps you work from home and the short hours between dropping the kids off at school in the morning and your lunch hour just fly by, so you grab a can of tuna and some vegetables to try and get in some quick and healthy fiber and protein. What if it all became a little too much, though? An influencer, who is now pregnant, took to her TikTok to share how after taking some blood tests last year, her doctor informed her that she had borderline mercury poisoning due to all the canned tuna she had been eating. Pretty intense, right?
Influencer, Grace Beverley, shared how she was eating too much tuna last year and it became a problem.
We all have our go-to easy meal that’s there for us when we don’t have a lot of time or energy to cook. For some people, it’s a grilled cheese. For others, it’s something tuna related.
A UK influencer named Grace Beverley recently took to her TikTok to share a little story that may work as a cautionary tale for some folks on consuming too much tuna.
The video starts with a stock shot of someone preparing some tuna in a bowl with the words “Name one person [who has] ever got mercury poisoning.” At that point, Grace pops onto the screen and says, “Hi, so actually, I did.”
Grace shared that she was going through a rough patch healthwise and she asked her doctor to do some blood tests to check her hormone levels and whatnot. After the tests were done, Grace received a call from her doctor to ask how many cans of tinned fish she was eating. Without even thinking, Grace shared that she was eating approximately one to two cans of tuna daily.
It was at that point that Grace’s doctor told her that she was borderline for mercury poisoning and she also had incredibly elevated arsenic levels. How scary is that?
Most in the comments are baffled by this and not looking to change their tuna eating habits to avoid a similar fate.

Sometimes, you can only tell a person so much. They have to make the choice themselves to change their habits, even if the alternative could potentially hurt them.
Most people in the TikTok comments section were very shocked to hear that this could happen simply from eating tuna everyday. One person shared, “Watching this as a pescatarian who eats tuna everyday.” Another individual commented, “Omg i have 3-4 cans of tuna a week i am shocked.” It seems that tuna is a lot of people’s go-to easy meal, which makes a lot of sense since it requires so little effort.
One person in the comments did appreciate learning this and decided they were going to change things up with their lunchtime meals. “Two a week???? I have at least one a day! Either in a sandwich for lunch or baked potato and give it to my husband for his lunch 😭 ok running to the shops for other lunches lol thanks for the info!” they shared.
One thing that might be helpful to some people to learn are some symptoms of mercury poisoning.
An individual on Reddit shared their firsthand account on symptoms they experienced with mercury poisoning.
If you’re thinking about how your body might respond and show symptoms of mercury poisoning, one person took to Reddit to share how eating two cans of chunk light tuna daily gave them mercury poisoning.
It goes without saying that you should always consult a registered healthcare professional if you’re concerned, but it can be helpful to at least learn about other people’s experiences.
This person shared that one of the symptoms they encountered due to mercury poisoning was either not being able to sweat or sweating too much. They also experienced dehydration and heat exhaustion. They would feel nauseous just from standing up. And they also had dry, itchy patches on their skin, which they shared was from their body excreting mercury.
Getting some blood tests from your doctor is always key, but if any of that sounds familiar and you are a daily tuna eater, you might want to reconsider things!
