Houston Mom Holding Newborn Is Shot in 3 A.M. Drive-By Less than a Week After Giving Birth

Bringing home a new baby is a stressful time for everyone involved. Even though you’ve had months of anticipation, nothing truly prepares you for those first days of parenthood. Less than a week after giving birth to a baby girl, a Houston mother brought her little one home and suddenly found herself in a terrifying situation. Bullets whizzed through her apartment, narrowly missing the newborn and striking the 27-year-old mom. Thankfully, she’s fine and speaking out to help others be aware.

Gunfire erupted in the middle of the night.

The new mom chose to remain anonymous, but her mother, Alexandia Burt, shared the terrifying story with KTRK. The shooting occurred at the Aubrey Apartments in West Houston on April 4, 2026. Around 3 a.m., bullets came flying into the second-floor apartment. Burt said one hit her daughter in the arm, just missing her brand-new daughter. “She’s in a lot of pain, and she’s traumatized,” Burt shared.

Burt counted eight bullet holes in the apartment wall.

Burt told KTRK her daughter went back to the hospital for treatment of her gunshot wound less than a week after doctors released her and her baby girl. The concerned grandmother said her daughter has no interest in returning to the apartment.

Houston police confirmed to KTRK that authorities had no suspects in the case but are actively investigating the shooting.

“Thank God it didn’t hit my grandbaby, and I also thank God that she’s still here with me today because, unfortunately, I could have lost her,” Burt said.

The shooting outraged the community.

Burt urged the shooter to put the guns down because “it’s not worth your freedom” or your life.

A former resident saw their worst fear come to light during the recent shooting. “Omg!! I was always worried about something like this happening when I lived in apartments,” the person shared in the comments section of the KTRK story posted on YouTube.

Others commended Burt for keeping her composure and for trying to stay positive during a very difficult time.

“Grateful this story has a happy ending! The grandmother is so sweet, thoughtful and decent, sending love + light to her, her daughter and grandchild,” one comment reads.

Some commenters think the mom needs to flee the apartment complex and find a new place to live. Of course, that’s easier said than done, as landlords and lease agreements can make moving very difficult.

“Everyone is saying leave but she just has a baby and still recovering. Prayerfully she has a significant other to help,” one commenter shared. “Hope she can get out of her lease and stay with family for now. So glad that beautiful baby and her mom is safe.”

Our hearts break for this family. We’ve had newborns and know how difficult that time of life is without this kind of tragedy. Police need to find whoever did this and hold them responsible. As Burt said, it’s not worth it.
