Dentist James Craig Reportedly Sexted & Flew Mistress To Be With Him While Wife Was Dying

A Colorado dentist accused of poisoning his wife allegedly kept active communication with his mistress while his wife was dying. James Toliver Craig, 45, was arrested earlier this week in connection with the death of his wife, Angela Craig. Investigators say James Craig used potassium cyanide to poison his wife slowly through her protein shakes. While his wife became increasingly ill, he was reportedly actively involved with another woman, Texas orthodontist Karin Cain.

Craig and Cain, who is also legally married, exchanged raunchy messages via email, the New York Post reported. Craig and Cain also planned to meet in Colorado while Angela Craig was hospitalized with what she believed to be a severe sinus infection, according to court documents obtained by the Post. A search of the dentist's emails reportedly produced damning evidence.

James Craig and Cain were reportedly having an affair.

Court documents state that the two exchanged numerous emails through an account James Craig had established on Google on February 27. The language was reportedly raunchy, and emails were signed off with phrases such as, "I love you."

Investigators reportedly found an exchange with a customer service representative from Midland Scientific about an order he placed for potassium cyanide as well, according to 9 News.

"James responded by stating he was a surgeon performing a craniofacial reconstruction. James said he is using this chemical to check and see if it will help with the layering of alternative metals," the affidavit reads.

Angela Craig's mysterious illness began in early March.

She apparently began to complain of dizziness on March 6 and was hospitalized March 9 at Parker Adventist but subsequently released on March 14. She was taken to University Hospital on March 15 and stayed until her death on March 18.

While his wife was hospitalized, James Craig reportedly booked flights for Cain to visit him in Colorado, court documents state. He allegedly purchased tickets for her first visit from March 8 to March 10 and then again from March 16 to March 20.

"It appears James was flying this woman into Denver while his wife and the mother of his children was dying in the hospital," investigators said in the affidavit.

Cain reportedly felt sympathy for James Craig in the days leading up to his wife's death.

The arrest affidavit details emails between Craig and Cain, using language fitting a couple engaged in a romantic relationship. According to court documents, Craig shared the gravity of his wife's illness during her second hospital stay.

"Hi honey, I am so sorry for what has transpired this week in your world," Cain wrote per the Post. "I am sorry I am not a part of your world to be of more help to you and instead I am pulling you away.

"This is so hard. I want to be and do whatever I can to support and encourage you and I don't want to add to what has become an incredibly difficult time," she added.

Investigators do not think Cain was aware of James Craig's plan, according to court documents.

Cain was married while she and Craig were reportedly involved, but divorce paperwork was filed in November 2022, according to the Post. Cain allegedly backed away from her relationship with James Craig in the wake of Angela Craig's death.

"I do want to give you any comfort I can but I do not feel it is right for me to mix in with all of those gathering to mourn Angela either and I do not want to meet your family as a friend and try to conceal what I feel for you," she wrote.

Cain may not have known about James Craig's plan, but Angela Craig reportedly was suspicious.

Angela Craig's sister told investigators her sister told James Craig she felt "drugged" as her mysterious illness began, according to court documents. He allegedly texted his wife on March 6 to ease her fears, according to texts obtained by investigators.

"Given our history I know that must be triggering. Just for the record, I didn't drug you," he replied. "I'm super worried though. You really looked pale before I left. Like in your lips even."

James Craig, who shares six children with his late wife, was arrested early Sunday morning on suspicion of first-degree murder. His next court appearance is scheduled for March 25, and he is being held in jail with no bond.
