Police Say Michigan Father Killed Wife and 6 Children Before Setting Home on Fire

Like many families who share on social media, Amanda “Mandy” Karolkiewicz and Kristopher Karolkiewicz seemed to have it all. The couple shared four biological children and two adopted children. They lived in the quaint town of Grand Haven Township, Michigan, where the streets are lined with colorful begonias.

But inside their family’s home, it appears trouble brewed. On July 24, 2026, emergency responders found all eight members of the Karolkiewicz family dead. Investigators believe Kristopher Karolkiewicz shot his wife and children before setting the home on fire and turning the gun on himself. The unthinkable tragedy rocked the tight-knit community.

Mandy and Kristopher Karolkiewicz shared a long relationship.

WFSB reported the couple began dating in 2008 and married the following year. They welcomed their first child in 2011 and remained dedicated parents, adding five more children to their home. Mandy Karolkiewicz, 39, worked as a substitute teacher, and her husband, 47, was a vice president of sales and marketing for the American Heart Association beginning in September 2023. Per WFSB, his employment ended in July 2026 per a statement from his employer, but they did not disclose any further details.

Mandy Karolkiewicz stayed active on social media.

The mom of six reportedly contributed to a parenting blog for more than a decade and then switched her focus to social media. She posted family-friendly content on TikTok, @mandykarolk, including a trip to China just days before the gruesome murders. In 2023, she coauthored a children’s book about positive self-talk.

The family’s deaths shocked loved ones.

Mandy Karolkiewicz’s cousin, Emily Jones, told WOOD that Mandy Karolkiewicz’s smile and personality lit up the room.

“She was just somebody that you loved whenever they walked in the room because your day was about to be better,” she said.

She added that Mandy Karolkiewicz loved being a mom, and it was the best part of her life.

“Her first one, when she had him, she was just, she was elated,” she said. “And that same joy came with every single one of her kids.”

The community immediately banded together for the family.

“Our hearts are with all those impacted, and we know many throughout our community may be grieving and struggling to process this news,” Grand Haven Area Public Schools Superintendent Kristin Perkowski shared in a letter to families.

“Given what has been reported so far, our team is preparing to deploy support for those who may need it. Although school is not currently in session, we will be ready to respond if and when additional information becomes available,” she added.

“We ask everyone to respect the privacy of those involved and avoid speculation or sharing information that has not been officially confirmed. Our Buccaneer family grieves alongside all those impacted by this tremendous loss. Please continue to care for yourselves and one another as our community processes this news together.”

Details remain unclear.

While some have shared rumors of potential infidelity and unhappiness in the marriage, authorities have not released a motive. Ottawa County Sheriff’s Department Captain Jacob Sparks shared information during a news conference.

“This is an unspeakable tragedy that we may never completely understand why it happened. But we will do our best to find the answers and to honor the memory of those victims,” Sparks said at the event.

Sparks added that in order to determined what happened in the home, police will conduct “a full, fair, thorough, detailed, complete investigation.”
