Mom Dies Protecting 9-Month-Old Baby During Stabbing Attacks at Australia Mall

Tragedy unfolded on Saturday, April 13, when a man armed with a knife began stabbing people at a mall in Sydney, Australia. Seven people died during the incident, including the attacker, who was shot by a police officer. Horrifyingly, among those injured during the rampage of violence was a 9-month-old baby.

First responders received calls about the stabbings about 3:30 p.m. at Westfield Bondi Junction, per a New South Wales Police Force news release. Among the dead was a woman named Ash Good, 38, the New York Post reported. Thanks to her heroic efforts, the mom was able to save her infant daughter, Harriet, who was one of the stabbing victims.

Local news outlets identified Good as a victim.

Mere hours before she died, Good reportedly posted a photo of her and her daughter via Instagram. “9 months out vs. 9 months in etc etc," she captioned the update, according to news.com.au, one of the news outlets listing the mother as a victim. Additionally, the mom posted a video clip of Harriet on her Instagram Stories with the song "My Girl."

Two brothers recounted how they helped the mother and her baby.

A pair of brothers who reportedly helped the stabbed mother and child shared their account of the attacks with 9News Sydney. One of the men who reportedly assisted with the stabbed baby described the infant's injuries as "really bad," adding, "There was a lot of blood on the floor… I hope the baby's all right."

His brother detailed how the events unfolded.

"We were just shopping. Shopping, saw the man run up to the woman with the baby, and then we were both ready to go and help out," his brother said. "But I just said to my brother, 'We've got to run in.'"

He continued, "[We] run in, told the guards to just lock up the doors, and the mother came with the baby, bleeding, stabbed. And we got them into the store, got them safe, and then just rang for help," per 9News Sydney.

The brothers reported that the mom didn't make it.

As they waited for help, the brothers and other Good Samaritans used clothing and shirts to try to help stop the bleeding.

The second brother indicated the mom didn't make it. "The mother, unfortunately, me and another lady which were compressing, she started having a lot of blood coming out of her mouth," he explained.

A Sky News anchor described Good as 'beautiful' 'inside and out.'

Sky News anchor Laura Jayes was a friend of Good. She described the mom as a “beautiful, beautiful girl, inside and out."

Jayes also noted that Good's daughter was taken into surgery after the attack. Of the 38-year-old mom, the news anchor added, “She was so smart, and an athlete, and so clever," also noting, "She saved her baby tonight.”
