Police Say Mom High on Amphetamines Abandoned Unresponsive Kids Ages 8 & 3 at Car Crash Site

A St. Louis mother is facing multiple felony charges following a May 12, 2025, car accident involving her two children. Courtney R. Brown reportedly stopped her car in the middle of eastbound Interstate 270 in north St. Louis County, causing a multi-vehicle crash. Brown allegedly walked away from the scene of the accident, leaving behind her two young kids, who were unresponsive and critically injured. When police called her back to the crash site, Brown reportedly behaved strangely.

According to a Missouri State Highway Patrol crash report, the accident occurred around 5:30 a.m., just before the morning rush began. Brown’s two children, an 8-year-old boy and a 3-year-old girl, suffered serious injuries.

Court documents show Brown allegedly stopped her car on the highway, and another vehicle hit her while attempting to swerve. Two other drivers reportedly struck the car before Brown got out and began walking away from the crash. A trooper ordered the mother to stop, but she apparently kept walking.

Emergency responders found Brown’s children unbuckled and unconscious in the front seat of the car, Fox 2 reported. Court records noted that the children did not have proper restraints inside the vehicle. Christian EMS took the two juveniles by ambulance to St. Louis Children’s Hospital in serious condition, the police report noted.

The two children remain intubated, according to Fox 2.

A short time later, police ultimately found Brown about a mile from the accident scene and ordered her to return. She allegedly had watery, bloodshot eyes, a relaxed demeanor, and slow movements. Police noted Brown also had confused speech, Fox 2 reported. Drug testing at an area hospital came back positive for cannabis and amphetamines.

Police arrested Brown and took her to the St. Louis County Justice Center. She faces two counts of DWI with serious physical injury, two counts of first-degree endangering the welfare of a child, three counts of leaving the scene of an accident with property damage exceeding $1,000, and one count of driving without a license.

She is being held on a $100,000 bond, Fox 2 reported, and she’s due in court on June 2 for a preliminary hearing.

According to Brown’s Facebook page, she’s worked as a certified nursing assistant since 2020. The mom regularly posts photos and videos on social media. A week before the crash, she shared two videos that appear to show her drinking alcohol while driving with sleeping children in the car. None of the kids seem to be in car seats.
