A Michigan mother lost two of her children in the early morning hours of April 19, 2026. Trevor Sheeler, 25, and Jasmine Sheeler, 24, both died from apparent gunshot wounds at a gas station near the border of Detroit and Redford Township. Surveillance footage from the area appears to show a confrontation between multiple people shortly before shots rang out. The shooter reportedly waited for and cooperated with police. The victims’ mother, Stacy Roberson, wants to understand exactly what happened.
The shooting occurred in the early morning.
The shooting occurred after a car crash, WDIV reported. Detroit police arrived at the scene of the shooting at the Sunoco gas station at West McNichols Road and Lahser Road around 3 a.m. There, they found Trevor Sheeler, Jasmine Sheeler, and her boyfriend, Lester Owens III, all deceased. As police began to piece together the story, it appeared the victims actually may have been the aggressors.
The group went drag racing earlier in the evening.
Detroit police sources told WDIV that Owens and the Scheeler siblings had been drag racing and allegedly antagonizing the suspected shooter. At some point, a car accident occurred, but the police released few details about the crash. Prior to the gunfire, Owens, Trevor Sheeler, and Jasmine Sheeler allegedly beat up the shooter and brandished weapons. When police arrived, they took the 24-year-old unidentified suspect into custody without incident.
Roberson cannot believe her children died in such a brutal manner.
The grieving mother told WDIV her children were her entire life. “There’s a hole in my heart,” Roberson said. “There’s a hole in my heart that I know will never be filled again. It will never be filled again. I don’t know how I’m gonna do it.”
Trevor Sheeler leaves behind two young children, and Jasmine Sheeler has a young daughter. The situation breaks their mother’s heart.
“It just didn’t make any sense to me,” Roberson said. “I still can’t even believe that they’re gone over foolishness.“
Owens’ family feels the same pain. The family described him as a vibrant, hard-working, and kind young man with a bright future cut short.
“That was my baby,” his father, Lester Owens Jr., shared with WDIV. “That was my everything. He had so much future. His life was ended by nonsense. He had a beautiful heart. He was loved by many.”
The shooter’s family has a different story.
Police arrested the unnamed shooter, who remains in custody. WDIV reported that the Wayne County prosecutor’s office declined to press charges against him.
“He did not intend to go out and harm anyone that night,” the alleged shooter’s family told WDIV. “He was in fear for his life.”
We may never know what really happened that night, but in the end, does it really matter? Three young people died and left behind children who’ll never have the blessing of growing up with parents because of gun violence. When will it end?
