Drunk Mom Is Arrested After Picking Up Son From School & Allegedly Stabbing Him With a Screwdriver

Police in Memphis, Tennessee, have arrested a mother who allegedly abused her son. Law enforcement officials accused Miriam Castillo, 44, of picking up the child from Hickory Ridge Middle School before the abuse started. The son told police his mother was driving erratically and attacked him when he tried to stop her.

WREG reported the incident took place on September 24. After Castillo picked up her son, she was apparently on her way to pick up her daughter from a different school but never made it. Police arrested Castillo and took her to the Shelby County Jail on a $40,000 bond.

The child tried to get help.

Castillo’s driving concerned her son, per WREG. His mother allegedly tried to push him out of a moving car, so he called his dad for help. When the car stopped, the man reportedly told his son to take the key out of the ignition. He listened to his father’s advice, which seemed to engage his mother. Castillo then allegedly physically attacked her son with a screwdriver.

The boy ran out of the car, desperate for help.

Witnesses claimed they saw the child running from Castillo on Newberry Avenue. The mother allegedly chased the child around the car as he yelled, “She is trying to kill me.”

A witness jumped in to help the child and protect him from his mother.

Police arrived a short time later.

When police arrived, they noticed a strong odor of alcohol coming from the mother, WREG reported. During a brief discussion, the mother allegedly admitted to drinking before picking up her son. Because of her intoxication, police were unable to take a statement from Castillo.
