Mom Turns 17-Year-Old Son in to Police After Shooting That Narrowly Missed Kids Playing Outside

Parenting is not an easy job. Many people will tell you it’s the most difficult, yet rewarding, job they’ve ever had. As parents, we must lay down tough love from time to time, even when the consequences might be uncomfortable for our kids and for us. But if we don’t set a good example for them, how can we expect our kids to make the best choices on their own? An Arizona mom recently learned about her teenage son’s involvement in a shooting, and instead of covering for him, she turned him in to the police.

The Bullhead City Police Department reported an unidentified 17-year-old male allegedly discharged a firearm at a residence in the 1600 block of Dean Drive around 7 p.m. on February 28, 2026. The teenager and his 35-year-old uncle reportedly got into a verbal altercation. As the adult man drove off, police say, the teen fired multiple shots in his direction. Thankfully, the bullets did not injure anyone.

“Several bullet casings were located in the front yard of the suspect’s residence on Dean Drive. It was reported that children were playing outside in the area near the shooting,” the police release read. “A homeowner who lives across the street reported a bullet went through his residence and passed over his head.”

The suspect left the area, and police began a massive search for the teenager. Just after 9 p.m., the 17-year-old’s mother brought her son to the police station. Police booked the teen on charges of attempted second-degree murder, endangerment, and misconduct with a weapon, the release noted.

In the comment section of the police department’s post on social media, many lauded the mother for her actions.

“Mom did the right thing for her son! I’m sure it was very hard for her to do and hopefully her son will learn a lesson and not do this again! Innocent people could have got hurt or killed because of a verbal altercation,” someone wrote.

Plenty agreed this was likely very hard for this mom, but in the end it will hopefully help her son.

“Some have to learn the hard way. I hope he sure does,” another comment reads. “Blessings to that mom for holding him responsible as well. I’m sure it will be rough roads for her and him. Thank God that no one was injured.”

This had to be a gut-wrenching decision. Thankfully, the mom’s doing her best to teach her teen the difference between right and wrong. He’s darn lucky he didn’t hurt or kill anyone.
