A Michigan mother claims her son allegedly had a death wish and she fulfilled it for him. Katie Lee, 39, reportedly killed her 17-year-old son, Austin Dean Pikaart, in their apartment in Holland on February 21, 2025. Lee reportedly called 911 early in the morning and made a bizarre confession to a dispatcher. Police officers arrived at the Bay Pointe Apartment Complex a short time later to a horrific scene.
According to court documents obtained by WZZM, Lee told the dispatcher she “couldn’t get her son to stop breathing” even though she’d been “trying for a while.” Austin allegedly told his mother he didn’t want to turn 18. His birthday would have been the day after he died.
Lee reportedly told the dispatcher she and her son attempted suicide together earlier in the day by overdosing on medication. Her son passed out around 6 p.m., and she allegedly slit his throat and arm with a large kitchen knife.
When police arrived, they found the mother in the doorway of her apartment, holding a knife in a threatening manner, court documents state, per WZZM. She also had blood on her clothes and the knife. When Lee did not comply with officers’ requests to drop the knife, they used a taser on her.

Lee allegedly told police they were supposed to kill her so she could be with her son. Emergency crews took her to an area hospital for a potential drug overdose, the news outlet reported.
Police found Austin’s body in a pool of blood in bed. An autopsy ruled his death a homicide from a large cut to his neck.
The family created a GoFundMe account in Austin’s honor. Organizer Alisa Pikaart declined to share details about his death but hopes to keep Austin’s memory alive.
She wrote, “Austin was caring, humorous, playful and most of all, loved and cared for his family and friends. He loved video games and all things’ space’ and ‘galaxy’ themed, and someday we plan to launch his ashes into space on an actual rocket ship for his final destination! It was truly an honor to have known him, and he will be deeply missed.”
She added, “The loss of an only child brings profound emotional pain and stress, often accompanied by unexpected financial burdens. Some of you have reached out and asked how you can help us during this time. Know that your kindness is much appreciated as we navigate this heartbreaking moment. We kindly ask, if you are able to, to donate funds towards Austin’s Celebration of Life service.”

The account has raised more than $6,200 of a $12,000 goal thus far.
Lee faces charges of open murder and resisting and obstructing an officer, according to WZZM. She is being held without bond. Per Michigan law, Lee could face life in prison if a court convicts her of murder.
