Authorities believe an older sister’s jealousy might’ve led to the tragic death of her baby sister. A mom reportedly left her kids home alone while their dad was at work. It’s unclear where she went, though one source suggested that she went to visit a friend. While she was gone, her 5-year-old child reportedly threw the 21-day-old baby out of the window of their fourth-floor apartment, killing her.
The horrific incident occurred in Vasilyevo, Russia, and is still under investigation. Authorities are trying to figure out why the young children were left by themselves in their family’s apartment and why the child threw her baby sister out the window.
According to The Mirror, the Russian Investigative Committee said, “a criminal case has been opened over the death of the infant.” The children’s mother might face criminal charges, and investigators are looking into “the actions of the parents who left the children unattended.”
Because of the tragedy, authorities are reminding other parents to not leave young children unsupervised. “I express my condolences to the family of the deceased and urge all parents to be vigilant and never leave your children alone,” said Mikhail Afanasyev, district chief in Zelenodolsk, Tatarstan, per the U.S. Sun.
One report claimed that local sources believe the 5-year-old child might’ve been jealous of the newborn. “The girl was upset that there was another child in the flat, and out of jealousy, she threw the infant out of the window,” the report alleged, per the Daily Mail.
Horrified witnesses learned of the incident when they heard a young girl scream. Shortly afterward, they saw the newborn on the ground outside. Tragically, first responders confirmed the baby’s death when they arrived at the apartment building.
