Thanks to the quick thinking of two New York City police officers, an infant survived a scary situation. About 9:30 p.m. December 27, 2024, NYPD officers Zihan Liu and Jeshua Hernandez responded to a call in the Sunset Park neighborhood in Brooklyn.
As soon as they arrived, they found a 22-day-old baby unconscious and turning purple, after reportedly choking on milk. Thankfully, the officers knew what to do and truly saved the day.

At first, there was a bit of a language barrier.
The officers told ABC 7 that when they arrived, they realized something was very wrong.
“When I got the baby in my hand, the baby is not soft anymore. You know, a baby is soft, little baby. I said oh no, this is not good,” Liu explained.
Liu began speaking to the family in Mandarin, which Hernandez does not speak. Hernandez said, “Once he told me choking, that’s when my heart stopped.”
Liu used his training to save the baby girl.
The officer told ABC 7 he thought back to his CPR training and practicing on a dummy baby, remembering the back slap technique.
“I keep thinking what if this doesn’t work, what if this doesn’t work? I was like what if I’m not doing this right? What if I’m not doing this right. I was nervous,” Liu said.
Liu and Hernandez kept up life-saving measures.
The police officers reportedly pushed on the infant’s back to release the blockage causing the choking, ABC 7 reported. While they waited for paramedics to arrive, the baby began to breathe again.
“I took this job, just because I love to help people. I speak the language, so why not join the force and help Chinese people in need,” Liu shared.
The officers saved the baby.
According to ABC 7, paramedics quickly took the infant to a hospital for treatment. She and her parents are reportedly doing well.
Hernandez said, “I was so happy I was able to be there. If we weren’t there, something worse could have happened.”
