Oklahoma Dad Allegedly Crashed Car & Fled the Scene, Leaving Teenage Daughter To Die

A father from Oklahoma, with a history of leaving the scene of car crashes, allegedly left his daughter to die and other family members injured after his most recent crash. The Bixby Police Department reported a collision on January 11, just after 9 p.m. The driver, 41-year-old Elliott Binney, allegedly took off from the scene of the rollover accident that took the life of his daughter, Shelby Binney, 16. Police said they found him in Checotah, the following day, nearly 50 miles away from the crash scene.

A newly released mugshot shows a somber-looking Elliott Binney with two black eyes. According to KJRH, the father had only minor injuries. Sadly, his eldest daughter died from her injuries, and three other people in the car, an adult and two children, were also injured. The occupants were reportedly members of they Binney family. Now, the father faces charges related to his teenager's death.

There were no other cars involved in the fatal wreck.

Fox 23 reported Bixby Police responded to the scene at East 171st and South 90th and found Shelby Binney's body thrown from the vehicle. Emergency crews took three other people to the hospital from the scene. Officers immediately began the search for the driver, who they believed left the area on foot.

"The driver, Elliott Binney, her father, left the scene at some point; he walked to a family-owned business and retrieved a vehicle. We were able to track this vehicle electronically and ultimately made an arrest in the case," Bixby Police Chief Todd Blish said.

They located him about an hour later in Checotah and arrested him on the scene.

The father had allegedly been drinking the night of the crash.

Per an arrest report obtained by Fox 23, Elliott Binney's wife, Brittany Binney, told police she was in the car at the time of the crash and that she and her husband had been arguing. Officers reportedly found a bottle of vodka at the scene, and after his arrest, Elliott Binney told police he had purchased the alcohol and had taken a "gulp" before driving his family home.

Police released bodycam footage of the father's arrest.

When the officer asked Elliott Binney if he had any weapons in his vehicle, he claimed the truck was very dirty, and he was "pretty positive" there were no weapons inside. The father appears to be slurring his words as he talks.

According to Fox 23, he told officers he hit an oil slick, which caused him to lose control of the car. Witnesses claim he was driving erratically, passing in no-passing zones at a high rate of speed.

The father reportedly has a history of leaving crash scenes.

Fox 23 reported that Elliott Binney had cases dismissed in 2010 and 2016 for allegedly leaving the scene of an accident. His most recent incident landed him in jail, but he posted a $102,000 bond and was released. He now faces charges of first-degree manslaughter and fleeing the scene of a fatal accident.

Shelby Binney's death shocked the community.

"These situations are tragic in every sense of the word," Bixby Police Chief Todd Blish told KJRH.

Her friend, Ainsley Young, created a GoFundMe in her honor.

"Shelby was a bright light to everyone, and lit up every room she walked into. She never failed to have a smile on her face and her laugh was contagious to all, she was such a light and blessing to a bunch of people. She helped a lot of those in need without even realizing it, she was someone people could count on. Please lend a helping hand to the Binney family and pray for them as they're going through a period of grief. Thank you!" the fundraiser page reads.
