Mom Allegedly Hit a Man Six Times With a Pickleball Paddle After He Criticized Her Son’s Game

We’ve all been at a sporting event or two for our kids and witnessed a parent taking things way too seriously on the sidelines when there’s a foul call they don’t agree with or a penalty involving their child. But what about those times when things get bloody and violent over practically nothing?

A Florida mom is catching heat after she repeatedly hit a male opponent with her pickleball paddle after he reportedly approached her son to critique his playing style. The incident began over a disagreement about retrieving a ball and ended with deputies arriving to the pickleball court to find a man with several bloody gashes on his face.

Pickleball has faced its fair share of criticism ever since it became uber popular several years ago, but who knew you’d have to watch out for angry moms who use their paddles as weapons while on the court?

According to the New York Post, 47-year-old Michele Bannister is accused of using a pickleball paddle to strike a male opponent several times on the head. Things quickly escalated on May 31, 2026, at Treaty Park in St. Augustine, Florida, over a disagreement about retrieving a ball during the match.

Shortly after, when the victim approached Bannister’s son to critique his playing style, the violent attack occurred. Police said the nurse practitioner was able to hit the victim several times, leaving him with bloody cuts across his face, per the Post.

A witness was able to help the man and noted how the court was a ‘bloody mess.’

A woman named Pam Hatch, also known as ‘Pickleball Pam’ to those in the know, was playing on a nearby court and rushed over to offer her assistance to the victim, Action News JAX reported.

Hatch, who is also the North Florida Ambassador for USA Pickleball, told the news outlet that Bannister “got in six good whacks with the side of the paddle. She was being torn off of him as well. She was upset. Something really did set her off.”

She also described to Action News JAX the state of the pickleball court after the incident. “There was blood kind of all over the place. I was helping the victim wring out the towel because it was a bloody mess,” she said.

Even though she was playing nearby, Hatch noted that when she “last looked up, [she] saw them all four playing,” but she still wasn’t sure what was said to provoke the violence that took place, Action News JAX reported.

Weirdly enough, the mom also lied to police about her identity after the incident.

When deputies arrived to the pickleball court, Bannister lied to them about her name and told authorities that her name was “Aiyanna Lei,” according to the affidavit read by the Post. The police later learned her real name when she provided her home address.

As for the reason for the incident, Bannister told police that she was defending her son, but investigators said that they found no evidence that he was in any danger that would have justified the alleged attack, per the Post.

Bannister has pleaded not guilty to aggravated battery with a deadly weapon and giving false identification to law enforcement.

There are several people in this Reddit thread who can’t quite fathom what exactly went down on that pickleball court that day to have things escalate to that level. One person wrote, “D—, this woman is a respected member of the community and a nurse practitioner. Can’t imagine what was said/misinterpreted that drove her to this.”

Another person in the thread wasn’t all that surprised. “Man, pickleball really produces some great drama, there is a large community where I live and they are always arguing and suing each other,” they wrote.
