It’s heartbreaking to see a mother be careless with the lives of her children. Whether it is addiction, mental health issues, or plain old selfishness driving an individual, when kids suffer because of it, that truly guts me. These precious, innocent young people asked for none of the chaos surrounding them. Perhaps it’s my internalized misogyny or my tendency to hold women to a higher standard, but I expect more out of mothers. I know so many who prioritize, love, and nurture their children; it is almost unfathomable a mother would be negligent with her own kids.
North Carolina mom and serial shoplifter Erika Johnson was nothing short of negligent when she prioritized thievery and refused to tell cops where her vehicle with two of her children inside was located while she did her dirty deeds, according to People.
Johnson, 35, was arrested at a Walmart in Washington, North Carolina, on March 14, 2026.
The mother was arrested at the store after employees alerted local authorities on about trespassing and shoplifting. Johnson allegedly entered the store, even though she was previously told not to go in, and tried to steal clothing by hiding it in a trash can she purchased, according to a copy of the magistrate order obtained by People.
As she was in custody and being questioned, her 3-year-old daughter reportedly told police her younger siblings were still in the vehicle, per Law & Crime.
The weather on March 14 in Washington hit a high of 73 degrees, which means the temperature in a vehicle can rise to 100 degrees in just 25 minutes, according to Lehigh Valley Health Network.
She also allegedly had a run-in with police in February 2026, when she was charged with two other shoplifting incidents, court records show, according to People.
When officers asked Johnson where her vehicle was, she allegedly lied.
Because of her refusal to answer, she was also charged in the most recent indictment with two counts of resisting a public officer. Luckily, after reviewing Walmart’s security camera footage, the officers were able to find the van she left them in, according to People. Police reportedly told WITN they found the children sweating in the car and not moving.
The children were taken to a hospital and treated. No further update has been given thus far on the state of the children or if they have been released into anyone’s custody. Assuming the children survived, their big sister essentially saved their lives.
Johnson is at the Beaufort County Detention Center with bail set at $35,000.
The mom was hit with a slew of charges, including two counts each of misdemeanor child abuse, resisting a police officer, second-degree trespassing, shoplifting concealed goods, and possession of a controlled substance, though it was not revealed what that substance was, People reported.
The cherry on top? Police also charged her with illegally parking in a handicap spot after locating her vehicle in one.
