What to Know
Losing your job is never easy, but most of the time, there’s a certain protocol that dictates how the bad news is delivered to the person getting fired — typically with an in person or virtual meeting or, at the very least, a phone call. However, that wasn’t quite the case for one single mom who was let go recently.
After she shared a video with a screenshot of her boss firing her via text over the weekend, people are outraged on her behalf, especially since it was done so unprofessionally.
Kristin McCarley shared the text in a TikTok video.
Recently, videos on TikTok that show a wild text someone received from someone in their lives have become a major trend, and this one that was shared by single mom Kristin McCarley is no different.
“Sometimes you just have to read your boss’ drunk text at 10:36 p.m. on a Saturday night and move on,” she wrote in the first slide.
The second slide shows the actual text message from her boss, which reads, “Do not come in on Monday. I’ve mage changes to the office. I have to let you go.”
Fortunately, it sounds like she’s taking the bad news in stride, and even called being fired “the biggest blessing” in her caption.
People are now advising her to take legal action.
In the comments, people are so angry with her boss — including multiple viewers who claim that they work in HR and who are urging her to escalate the situation, and in some case, even take legal action against her now former boss.
“You about to get a Christmas blessing in the form of a lawsuit,” one of the comments said.
“Hi. Employment attorney here. Go talk to an experienced plaintiffs side employment attorney from your state. Do not listen to anything in the comments other than ‘go see an attorney,'” one person advised. “In the U.S., employment laws are fee shifting so consults with attorneys are often free or cheap.”
Her boss has since blocked her phone number.

In a follow up video that Kristin shared after her story had gone viral and was shared more widely, she gave a little update on the situation, revealing that she’d been at her former place of work for over a year. At the same time, she thanked everyone for their support (and for helping her video go viral).
“Hopefully, this will come out more positively than negatively, and I can support my family by making videos,” she said.
She added in a comment, “I went Monday and dropped keys off. He blocked my number.”
It sounds like moving on from this job really is for the best… but our fingers are crossed she finds an even better opportunity soon.
