A Kansas teen who reportedly admitted to killing his girlfriend in May 2025 now claims he’s not guilty. Naomi Oglesby, 20, was 37 weeks pregnant with a baby girl when her boyfriend, Matthew Criscenzo, 20, allegedly shot her in the head. Emergency responders rushed to the scene and took Oglesby to a hospital, where she delivered her baby, Zy’nia. Tragically, Oglesby died a short time later.
Law & Crime obtained court documents outlining the shooting. From what Criscenzo reportedly told police at the scene, it sounds like he had worried Oglesby might leave him.
Per an arrest affidavit, an officer from the Wichita Police Department arrived on the scene and saw Naomi lying on the floor in a pool of blood. She had a gunshot wound to her head, and police noted Criscenzo was attempting to give her CPR.
“I can’t believe I did this ,just f—— kill me,” he said, per Law & Crime. “I didn’t want to, I didn’t mean to, I just didn’t want her to go and I thought she was gonna leave me.”
Police also wrote that Criscenzo claimed he was drunk at the time of the shooting. It appears the alcohol made him insecure in his relationship, and those insecurities led to the shooting. “She loved me and I killed her,” he reportedly said.
While police spoke to Criscenzo, emergency responders rushed Oglesby to the hospital. Doctors delivered her baby via emergency C-section. Sadly, the young mom died just two minutes after her baby girl was born. Her family set up a truly heartbreaking GoFundMe account that states the baby’s future is unclear.
“Naomi was a beautiful young soul who was taken too soon. Her baby Zy’nia is still alive but doctors have said she may not survive or have any quality of life,” the fundraiser reads.
Since his arrest in May, it appears Criscenzo has had a change of heart. According to KAKE, he entered a not guilty plea in court on September 11. Criscenzo faces multiple charges, including first-degree murder and aggravated battery. He’s due back in court in October and is in Sedgwick County Jail on a $700,000 bond.
