When adults decide to separate after being in a relationship, it takes an emotional toll not only on them but also on those who love them. These situations can become increasingly difficult when children are involved. The kids sometimes find themselves in the middle and have to choose between two people they love. It’s both heartbreaking and traumatizing. One Texas family is dealing with a tragic loss following a domestic dispute that escalated, leaving a father dead.
The Harris County Sheriff’s Office responded to a late-night call for help.
Major Ben Katrib with the sheriff’s office shared information during a May 5 news conference, explaining that deputies responded to a home in the 21400 block of Sangrantino Court in Katy, just after 3:30 a.m. that day. An unidentified woman in her 30s called 911 regarding her estranged husband. He allegedly showed up at her home and was banging on the door to get in. The woman did not want to let the unnamed man inside, but he seemed determined. By the time police arrived, things had escalated.
The man got into the home.

Katrib said during the news conference that the man apparently figured out the security code, made his way inside, and a fight ensued. When deputies arrived, they found the husband unresponsive in the front yard and administered CPR, but he did not survive. After talking with the family, they learned the estranged husband got into a physical fight with another adult male inside the home, which eventually ended in the front yard.
A 15-year-old boy, believed to be the couple’s son, got caught in the middle of the disturbance, Katrib added during the news conference. The teen allegedly held the aggressor in a chokehold to keep him away from his mother. An autopsy will reveal the exact cause of death.
It’s unclear whether the teenager will face charges.
In addition to the woman and man inside the home, three juveniles were present when the estranged husband arrived. According to Katrib, all information will be turned over to the district attorney’s office to determine whether a crime occurred or whether the boy acted in self-defense. Katrib confirmed there is no ongoing threat to the public and that this was the sheriff’s office’s first interaction with the family. He urged anyone with information to contact the sheriff’s office.
This is a heartbreaking situation.
Many commented on the sheriff’s Facebook post, urging adults not to involve kids in these situations.
“So tragic, people please don’t do this to your children. Until your divorce is final keep your next relationship away from your home,” someone wrote. “This young man has to live with killing his father because his mother had her new friend over. If your divorce is contentious please, please leave your kids out of it..prayers for the children in this home.”
We may never know what happened that night or what led up to the incident. No matter what it was, three children now have to live with this memory forever. A 15-year-old boy potentially killed his own father to save his mother. It’s truly devastating.
