Call it a coincidence, or call it an Oedipus complex, but when one woman shared a video on TikTok where she points out how she and her son’s girlfriend look almost identical, it’s hard not to want to fly to the comments. In the video, Zashia Santiago dances alone for a while, but then her son’s girlfriend joins her from off-camera, and they continue to dance together. They have the same hairstyle and exact same dress.
The text on the screen says, “When you and your son’s girlfriend start to look alike.” Over on the son’s girlfriend’s TikTok, in a video where Santiago is featured, someone commented to ask if they are mother and daughter because they look so much alike. That may not be the worst thing in the world. But, for other users who left comments sharing their questions and concerns, the issue is that the mom doesn’t seem to mind at all.

The mom and son’s girlfriend seem to think it’s funny that they look so much alike.
In Santiago’s original TikTok, both she and her son’s girlfriend seem to laugh at the idea that they look so much alike. They also seem extremely close. In another video on Santiago’s page, her son’s girlfriend calls Santiago her “best friend” as the two women dance together. Plenty of people thought Santiago was closer to her son and his girlfriend’s age, which is another reason why she appears to look so much like the younger woman. But the video where she calls out looking like her son’s girlfriend is a little much for some.
A couple of TikTok users even commented to point out neurologist Sigmund Freud’s Oedipus complex theory. This states that a boy may develop an infatuation with his mother without even realizing it. Going by that, some users believe Santiago’s son could have fallen for his girlfriend because she looks like his mom. But mostly, it just seems like a big coincidence that they have leaned into hard.
Users aren’t sure it’s a good thing.
Just because the family seems to think it’s funny that the mom and her son’s girlfriend look alike, it doesn’t mean others have accepted it. One “boy mom” commented under the TikTok that she doesn’t understand why any mom would want to look like their son’s girlfriend. Someone else wrote, “If my significant other starts to look like my mom, I’mma need a lifelong supply of therapy.”
“I would start questioning a lot of things,” another person shared.
Someone else wrote, “So you’re your son’s type.”
But other users are in the TikTok creator’s corner.
“She said ‘start’ to look like because they [are] becoming closer to each other,” one user commented in defence of her. “Not because they already looked like each other. That ain’t a Freud theory.”
Another supportive comment chimed in, “Are y’all OK in this comment section? This was such a cute video. Y’all always gotta take it somewhere dark.”
Regardless of your feelings about a mom looking like her son’s serious girlfriend, there are clearly mixed reactions.
