2-Year-Old Found Dead 20 Hours After He & His Dad Were Separated During California Flood

Brandon Padilla Aguilera found himself in a desperate situation on September 18, 2025. He and his 2-year-old son, Xavier Padilla Aguilera, became trapped in flood waters in Barstow, California, while in the dad’s car. The rushing water swept the car off the roadway. Tragically, the father and son became separated from their vehicle and each other. Multiple agencies deployed, desperate to find Padilla Aguilera and Xavier, as the clock ticked.

Barstow Police reported finding Padilla Aguilera on an island created by the floodwaters a short time later and took him to a hospital for treatment. Xavier was not with his father at the time of the rescue, creating even more urgency. Barstow Police, Barstow Fire Protection District, San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department, Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railway Police, California Highway Patrol, and City of Barstow Public Works searched for Xavier for nearly a day. Sadly, by the time they found the toddler, he was dead.

“It is with profound sadness that the City confirms the discovery of a young child who lost their life in the recent flooding incident on Main Street at Lenwood Road,” police shared. “After more than 20 hours of extensive search and rescue operations, emergency responders located the child’s body this afternoon. Our hearts go out to the family and loved ones during this unimaginably difficult time. We extend our deepest condolences to those affected by this tragedy.”

Many have used Xavier’s death as a time to preach about flood safety through the police department’s Facebook page comments section.

“I know this is such a tragedy for not only the family but our community as well,” someone wrote. “It is a blunt reminder to always stay safe during any flood watch alerts or visible fast-moving waters in our area. Stay clear, turn around, and move away from such visible dangers. Do not attempt to cross such obviously dangerous swiftly moving flood waters. Our family as well as this entire community’s hearts & condolences go out to the family of this child.”

Others simply shared their love.

One community member wrote: “When one parent grieves, we all grieve, lived in barstow for nearly 10 years and i may of not known this family but my heart hurts so much for everyone involved, family and more. words cannot express enough nor can be enough for this tragic event going on.”

Family friend Jason Bogart created a GoFundMe for Padilla Aguilera and Xavier’s mother, Alexis DeJesus. He shared sweet words about a life taken far too soon.

“Xavier was the happiest, most loving baby — always smiling, always eating, and bringing joy to everyone around him,” Bogart wrote. “He loved watching Ms. Rachel and Morphle. He also leaves behind two older brothers and a big sister who are heartbroken by his loss.”

We cannot imagine how this poor father must feel today. Hopefully, with the help of those who love him, he will find peace and healing.
