‘She Was the Most Loyal Person’: 22-Year-Old Mom Dies Just 9 Days After Giving Birth to Twins

A new dad in Utah will have to raise his twins alone following the sudden death of their mother. Morgan Hughes, 22, died nine days after giving birth to her daughter Georgia and son Hudson. She leaves behind a heartbroken husband, Sam, 23, and their extended families. Loved ones and members of their Cedar Hills community want to honor Morgan’s memory and help Sam as he faces life as a single dad.

Just a few days after delivery, according to ABC 4, Morgan began to feel ill, and her family took her back to the hospital. Tests reportedly showed high white blood cell levels, a possible sign of leukemia. Tragically, Morgan passed away on December 28, 2024, just nine days after giving birth. Now, her family wants to help her widower raise their children.

Morgan’s brothers loved their sister.

Justin Hodson and Kaden Hodson told ABC 4 that their sister was a wonderful person who will be sorely missed.

“She was the most loyal person that you could have ever been around,” Justin Hodson said. “If you were in her corner, she would have done anything for you. Just caring and loving.”

Kaden Hodson added, “No matter what she stood for, what she believed in, and what she thought was right, especially, like Justin said, for family.”

They recalled that when she learned she was expecting twins, everyone was so excited, but especially Morgan.

The brothers-in-law also adore Sam.

Justin Hodson and Kaden Hodson told ABC 4 that they would miss their sister tremendously, but they knew Sam would honor her memory. “Sam is the one person you want to have marry your sister, knowing that he’s strong and willing to do anything for her,” Justin Hodson said.

Kaden Hodson added that he is confident in Sam’s ability to raise the twins alone. “Sam is the one person that can do this,” he said.

Following her death, the community came out in full support of the family.

Justin and Sam Hodson told ABC 4 that the street where Morgan grew up on now has ribbons in her memory. In addition, family and friends have provided meals, flowers, and generous financial support.

“It’s really cool to see how many people Morgan touched,” Kaden Hodson told the news outlet. “And (how they) felt special because Morgan made them feel special.”

Loved ones created a GoFundMe page to support Sam.

The fundraiser has brought in nearly $300,000 thus far to aid Sam as he raises Georgia and Hudson alone.

Morgan’s cousin, Sarah Thorne, shared the fundraiser, writing, “She was a loving daughter, sister, wife and friend. She has a beautiful smile and was so excited to be a mom. We know she will be with her babies in spirit as they continue on in life with their father and their families.”

The family thanked the community for its support.

Brian Hughes took to Facebook to share his gratitude on behalf of Sam and the rest of the Hughes family.

He wrote in part, “Words cannot adequately express the loss we feel with Morgan’s passing. She epitomizes grace, beauty, kindness, strength and so many other Christlike attributes. Her legacy of love and faith lives on in Sam and those precious twins, Hudson & Georgia. Without question we know we will see Morgan again and we openly express our love and gratitude for a kind and merciful God and for his son Jesus, who we love and adore. Friends, Jesus is the only way.”

The family will hold a service in Morgan’s honor on January 3.
