How many times a day do we cross the street without thinking twice? We always tell our children to look both ways, and we hopefully model that safe behavior. Sometimes, even when we take all the proper precautions, accidents still happen. A San Francisco community is mourning the loss of a 2-year-old girl who died while crossing an intersection with her mother on February 28, 2026. The tragedy reminds us that even when we are right next to our children, terrible things can happen.
KTVU reported that officers from the San Francisco Police Department arrived at 4th and Channel streets in the Oracle Park neighborhood just before 9 p.m. Emergency responders immediately began life-saving measures and took the mother and child to an area hospital. Sadly, staff pronounced the little girl dead a short time later. Her mother only had minor injuries.
San Francisco Mayor Daniel Lurie shared a message of comfort for the victim’s family. “I am heartbroken by the tragic loss of a two-year-old child in last night’s crash in Mission Rock, and my thoughts are with the family during this unimaginable time. My heart is also with the child’s mother, who was injured in this incident,” Lurie said.
Several witnesses posted about the accident in a Reddit thread.
“I saw this happen from my apt. It was the most heart breaking and terrifying thing I’ve ever witnessed. I ran over to the child to provide cpr but they were awake at that time so I turned around to avoid just being in the way,” one person wrote. “When I found out they died this morning I cried. I’m an MD and have seen some stuff but this was different. I think I’m going to buy a bouquet of flowers later and leave it on the corner.”
Another bystander gave a horrifying account of the scene.
“I believe I was next to you as you ran up to the child because I ran up to her INSTANTLY as well and couldn’t help myself but to almost pick that baby up,” the person wrote. “I thought I seen a trash bag rolling under a car until I heard a scream and I immediately stopped and seen a lady getting her legs crushed as she’s curled up in a ball. At this point everyone is screaming at the driver to reverse. She decided to go forward a bit and stops.”
But the story gets so much worse from there.
“This is when I hear the CHILD screaming and I instantly screamed myself and the driver decides to go forward again immediately stopping on that child’s face/chest. Then decided to go forward all the way completely running over this child’s body,” the witness continued. “I instantly run over to the mother and the child (tmi) but the world is so cruel I have this image of that poor child in my head. She had bl**d coming out of her mouth and her leg was bent..babygirl was unconscious and bystanders smashed the drivers back window as she was supposably almost trying to take off.”
The driver remained at the scene, and police do not expect alcohol or drugs played a role in the accident, KTVU reported.
Although she survived, this poor mother’s life will never be the same. We can’t fathom the guilt, even if it was all a tragic accident.
