Some busy parents get into a routine just to make it through the morning and get everyone where they need to be on time. But when even the tiniest change of plan comes up, it can really rock the boat. Take it from one mom, Aliza Friedlander, who had a early-morning meeting and left her husband the one in charge of getting their daughters to school. This didn't seem like a big deal, but lo and behold, mom later found out that her 3-year-old Brooklyn didn't quite make it to school completely dressed. Instead, the little jokester managed to head off to class with dad's blessing wearing only her underwear as pants after completely fooling him with her explanation for her look.
Friedlander had an early-morning work event on June 4, which meant her husband was in charge of getting their 3-year-old dressed and off to music class.
As she explained in a post on Instagram, Friedlander has only recently started working part-time again after five years of being a stay-at-home mom. Any mom who's gone back to work knows that the transition can be a little rough at the beginning, but one morning things took a hilarious turn.
"This morning I had an event that started before school drop off," the mom wrote. "My husband stayed home and helped get the kids out for school." Somehow, Friedlander's 3-year-old daughter, Brooklyn, managed to make it by her dad a little underdressed for her morning music class. "Apparently, my daughter decided to wear underwear (not just any underwear but thick diaper like training underwear used for potty training) and told my husband they were 'short shorts,'” she added.
"Based on her smile and the fact she locked her door while getting dressed, I’m pretty sure she knew they weren’t shorts!!" she wrote.
Luckily for the mom, her mother and a friend who also has a child in her daughter's class noticed right away that something was amiss.
Friedlander spoke to Today.com and told the outlet her husband had dropped off their 5-year-old, Lila, at school and then met his mother-in-law, Anita King, at Brooklyn's music class where the grandmother noticed that the girl wasn't fully dressed. "Her initial thought was she was wearing white bike shorts scrunched up in the front with a shirt covering them," the mom recalled. "I think when she went into the classroom and saw Brooklyn from behind, she realized that they, in fact, weren't shorts."
But just to be safe, the grandmother checked with a friend of Friedlander's to make sure she was truly looking at her granddaughter walking around in her underpants.
"She stayed very calm and didn't make a big deal about it and just turned to one of my close friends, Melissa, and asked, 'I think Brooklyn is wearing underwear,' to which Melissa said, 'Yes,'" the mom continued.
Of course, King wasn't going to let Brooklyn spend the rest of the day in only her underwear, so instead she headed over to Lila's classroom and borrowed a spare pair of shorts for her younger granddaughter to use. Friedlander said she only learned of her daughter's unusual outfit when her friend sent her a photo of her daughter walking around in the white, potty-training underwear.
Of course, Friedlander thought the mistake was funny and had to laugh when she realized her husband hadn't noticed his daughter's outfit.
Luckily this mom has a good sense of humor. "When I got the text message from my friend, I just shook my head and laughed," she said. She then texted her husband and told him that their daughter was practically streaking at school.
"You sent her to school in her underwear," the mom wrote in a screen grab from her Instagram post. To which her husband later responded, "At least she's wearing something."
The mom later told Today that the mix-up was just a little understandable because her daughter does own a lot of bike shorts and the little sneak did incorrectly tell her dad they were shorts — not undies.
"I think she may have actually thought they were shorts, but when I asked her about it she got this huge smile on her face and started cracking up, so I'm not entirely confident our 3-year-old wasn't playing a joke on her father," she said.
"She was actually wearing a pair of underwear under the underwear, so she was wearing them as shorts even though they weren't," the mom added. "He has never let an epic fail happen like this before … he spends a ton of time with the girls and gets them dressed all the time, which is what makes this even funnier."
The mom also spoke with CafeMom and tells us that the response to her story online has been "unbelievable."
"I can't believe how many people are able to relate to this and I just crack up at all the moms I see calling out their own husbands saying this is something they would do," she says. "There have of course been some trolls (as one would expect with something like this) but honestly they don't bother me. Brad is an incredibly capable person and hands on father and if I didn't believe that I wouldn't think this was funny. In fact, the fact he is so capable and that he has done the morning routine other times, it makes it that much better!"
