20 Cold Weather Costumes in Case Halloween Is Extra Chilly

Depending on were you live, the weather forecast for Halloween might be looking a little grim this year. So many people take a lot of pride in the outfits they choose to wear on Halloween. For kids, it's the one time of year they get to express themselves and show off their costumes for school friends or while trick-or-treating. Even if you and your kiddos have had their costumes planned out for months, a cold front could end up putting a pin in everything, and you could end up having to switch gears last-minute.

Our own parents would often make us put jackets over our beloved costumes when temperatures dropped just in time for trick or treating. Half the time, no one could even see the costumes we put so much thought into. To spare our own children from a similar fate in places where October can be a bit chillier or in the event it ends up being unexpectedly chilly, we found some fantastic costumes we think kids will love, that will also keep them super cozy.

Rockets are cool, and they're also fun for kids to dress up as. And because there's a lot of material that goes into a costume like this, it's also a warm one. Kids can wear pants and long sleeves with it — in addition to the costume itself being like an insulated jacket on its own. The material is easy to move in though.

Glow-in-the-Dark Skeleton

Skeletons are some of the most classic Halloween costumes because they capture the essence of the holiday: they're dark, spooky, and cool to dress up as. Another perk of a skeleton costume like this one from Pottery Barn Kids is that it's warm. Both top and bottom parts of the outfit are comfortably warm for trick-or-treating.

Unicorn

Unicorns are magical, mystical creatures that everyone loves — not just kids. A unicorn costume is bright and fun, and so different from everyday clothes. No wonder they're a hit with kids. While there are different ways to be a unicorn, dressing up as one in onesie form is definitely the warmest, as clothes can also be worn underneath for extra warmth.

Mandalorian Beskar Armor

Kids love the Star Wars universe, especially The Mandalorian which has been popular as a release on Disney+ over the last two years. A perk of kids dressing up as a character like Beskar is that the costumes have lots of coverage to insulate kids against cold October weather while keeping the full integrity of the outfit.

Hei Hei From 'Moana'

Moana came out a few years ago, but it's still a favorite with lots of kids. While dressing up as a person from Moana might present some challenges in cold weather, as their outfits were made for a tropical climate, a Hei Hei outfit will definitely work for cold weather. It's a suit that can double as an extra layer of warmth.

Dalmatian

The movie Cruella came out in 2021 (based on Disney's earlier One Hundred and One Dalmatians movie), which has reignited interest in Dalmatian dogs. It also makes for an easy and absolutely adorable costume. The best part is that because dogs have fur, this costume provides that extra layer of warmth so kids won't have to worry about having to add a jacket on top.

Baby Yoda

We couldn't mention costumes from The Mandalorian without mentioning one of the most iconic characters from it: Baby Yoda (or Grogu, if you prefer). He's still popular and will make a great costume that already has a long coat as part of the clothing. Add a onesie and leggings underneath, and the kiddo should stay warm.

PJ Masks

PJ Masks is a popular kids show this year, and it makes sense that kids would want to dress up as a character from it. They can, and keep warm, too. This Catboy costume in particular is a full suit that can be worn over warmer clothing or a jacket. The mask also kinda doubles as a hat to keep those ears covered and warm.

Flying Squirrel Costume

Who doesn't love a flying squirrel? This costume is fun, cute, and cozy, as it's also a onesie that will keep things nice and toasty and fit easily over other clothes or a jacket. Plus, the wings are basically mini blankets in and of themselves.

NASA Astronaut

Being an astronaut has always been a job that kids find super cool, whether it's the job itself or getting to to into space. Interest has been reignited due to all of these billionaires making trips into space this year. It also reminded us a space suit makes a great costume that also happens to be incredibly warm.

Elsa

Frozen will forever be a Disney classic, and we're sure many kids will want to dress up as one of the characters for Halloween. This actually works, since the whole movie is based in a super cold place (it's called Frozen after all) and all of the costumes are already tailor made for colder weather. It's a win-win for parents and kids.

Flamingo

Flamingoes are such awesome birds. First of all, they're bright pink and second, they have fun, pretty feathers. All of this to say that the birds provide great inspiration for a Halloween costume, especially a warm one. This one in particular comes with a warm "jacket" to put over a long-sleeved shirt and leggings or pants. This costume also has its own hat to keep the kid cozy all night.

Penguin

Speaking birds as inspiration for Halloween, another great bird costume idea for colder weather: a penguin. It's a super fun costume for any type of weather but it just works when it's extra chilly out. It's a onesie that can be worn over regular clothes without having to throw a jacket on top of it. And again, there's a hat with it, too.

Harry Potter

Harry Potter started with millennials, but there are tons of kids in Gen-Z and younger who have grown an appreciation or even love for the books (and movies). After all, there's even a whole section of a theme park dedicated to the wizarding world. What makes this costume good for colder weather is the robe (the scarf is sold separately).

Captain Marvel

Dressing up as a superhero is always a good idea. Kids can dress up as them any time, but it's fun to do so on Halloween when everyone gets to see the costume. This Captain Marvel costume is a body suit that covers the arms and legs in full, which should keep things nice and cozy for the kid wearing it.

Minecraft

Kids love video games, and that's not a new thing. But kids these days really love to play Minecraft especially, so it makes sense that they'd want to dress up as one of the characters from the game for Halloween. We love this one as it's an outfit that allows coverage for warmth, and it has a mask to keep the face and ears of its wearer nice and cozy.

Black Panther

Blank Panther is such an amazing hero we can't think of any good reason why kids wouldn't want to be the Marvel character for Halloween. Luckily, it's also a full suit to sustain kids in chillier weather, and also comes with a mask to help keep the kiddo warm even if it's windy. There also seems to be some padding in the suit which we assume provides at least some insulation.

Cruella De Vil

One Hundred and One Dalmatians villain Cruella de Vil came back into the limelight as the star of her own Disney movie in 2021 starring Emma Stone. Kids can dress up as her and stay warm, too, since, uh, she wore furs and fur jackets as part of her whole look. This one won't be real of course, though, so no worries.

Sometimes, simpler Halloween costumes are the best ones. We love this adorable puppy costume for toddlers and younger kids. Just look at the floppy ears! It's also perfect for putting on a kid when they need to trick-or-treat in cold weather. It's a warm onesie that has an ear cap that doubles as a winter hat.

Ghost

Dressing up as a ghost for Halloween is probably as classic as it gets. It's super easy and kids look so cute in their spooky ghost costumes. The cool thing about ghost costumes is that they can be made out of something warmer and heavier than a sheet, like a blanket cloak. Something like that can act as a shawl to keep the little one warm in cooler October weather.
