There are plenty of ways you might expect a baby shower or gender reveal to go wrong, but none of those ways probably include your own mother stealing your thunder. A TikTok user and new mom by the name of Gianna shared a video on the platform from her gender reveal and wrote on the screen that she had “no idea” she wouldn’t be the one to reveal her baby’s gender.
To be fair, she also wrote in the caption of another video from the event that she was too excited about having a girl to care about it in the moment. The idea was for her and her husband to each pop open a confetti tube. If the color was pink, it would mean they’re having a girl, and blue would mean it’s a boy. Pretty standard stuff. But when they each get one color, there is a moment of confusion. Before, of course, Gianna’s mother comes in to actually reveal the baby’s gender.
Her mom seems to make the event all about her.

In Gianna’s video, she wrote on the screen that no one else was aware that her mother would make the event about herself by being the center of attention. After her and her husband’s confetti tubes go off and they stand in confusion, her mother stands on a ledge and pops a balloon that releases pink confetti.
Although Gianna celebrates with the rest of her guests, in the seconds before her mom popped the balloon, she appeared visibly upset. In the caption, Gianna wrote, “For everyone who thinks this was staged here’s the behind the scenes, I put too much trust into the fact that ‘she had something planned.'”
So she knew her mother wanted to do something special but she wasn’t aware that her mom would be the one to actually reveal the baby’s gender. Sadly, this may be a pattern with her mother. In another video, Gianna shared that her mother made her wedding day about her as well when she caught the bouquet.

Gianna also posted a “narcissistic mom reveal” to shed more light on the gender reveal mishap.
“I wasn’t mad, because I was having a girl and she knew that I couldn’t be mad that day, because that’s what I wanted,” Gianna says in that video.
Her mother admits she took over the reveal for “the element of surprise” and “to do something funny.” Never mind the fact that the event had nothing to do with her, of course.
Gianna says she wouldn’t have her mother be the “gender keeper” for any future pregnancies so she could avoid a similar situation. And really, that’s all anyone needs to know about how the new mom sees the gender reveal that her mom sort of took over.
