How To Keep Baby’s Skin Looking Healthy During Each Season

As the seasons change throughout the year, most of us experience changes in our skin — and the same is true for babies! In fact, babies may be more vulnerable to the changing seasons because their skin is much more delicate than older kids' and adults' skin. Babies’ skin is 30% thinner than adult skin, and it takes two to four years for their skin to mature. That’s why it’s so important to take care of babies’ skin — to make sure it’s hydrated, moisturized, and protected.

Here are some tips for taking care of your baby’s skin during each season:

All Year

When it comes to keeping baby’s skin looking healthy all year, moisturization is key! For up to five years after birth, the level of hydration in a baby’s skin is lower than adult skin; so keeping skin moisturized is a must. And there are a few other skincare musts: bathing regularly (but not too often — two to three times per week should be good!), staying hydrated (with breastmilk/formula for newborns and a combination of breastmilk/formula and other drinks for older babies), and using moisturizing products formulated with ceramides to help restore and maintain baby’s skin barrier, which will help skin retain moisture. CeraVe’s line of baby skincare has been developed with pediatric dermatologists and contains three essential ceramides to help reinforce baby’s protective skin barrier. Find out which products are best for which times of year and make sure to keep CeraVe Healing Ointment on hand all year to prevent and treat diaper rash!

Winter

In the winter, it’s not unusual for babies to experience dry skin. When air humidity is low (inside and outside), skin has more difficulty maintaining its essential hydration levels. Baths are a necessity, but too many can dry out baby’s skin. Long baths, especially in water that is too warm, can remove protective lipids from the skin’s surface, allowing moisture to escape. Make sure to bathe baby for no more than 10 minutes at a time in lukewarm water, for a maximum of two to three times a week. Use a mild wash such as CeraVe Baby Wash & Shampoo, which is formulated with three essential ceramides and Vitamin E to gently cleanse without drying. Also make sure to use the right kind of moisturizer, like a thicker, cream-based moisturizer. CeraVe Baby Moisturizing Cream has a rich texture that makes it ideal for applying during cold weather months. The Moisturizing Cream provides 24-hour hydration and helps maintain the skin’s barrier.

As the weather gets warmer, many parents shy away from rich moisturizing creams — with the CeraVe Baby Moisturizing Cream, that’s not necessary. Although it provides deep hydration, it’s not greasy or heavy on the skin. It’s also formulated without fragrances, parabens, or dyes. Pair it with the CeraVe Baby Moisturizing Lotion for warmer days to provide the perfect amount of hydration.

Summer

During the hot summer months, you’ll still want to keep baby’s skin hydrated. During the day opt for a lightweight lotion, and before bed apply a thicker hydrating cream. This will keep skin moisturized overnight (especially if you have dry air from air conditioning). When you’re out and about, dress baby in lightweight, sun-protective clothing that covers their arms and legs. Opt for a wide-brimmed hat that fully shades baby’s face. Limit your baby’s outdoor time to when damaging ultraviolet rays are less intense, usually before 10 a.m. and after 2 p.m. If your baby’s doctor advises it’s safe to use sunscreen on your baby, try CeraVe Hydrating Baby Sunscreen SPF 45, which is formulated specifically for baby’s delicate skin – it’s paraben free and uses 100% mineral filters.

Fall

During the fall, before the weather fully cools off, you’ll often have a mix of hot, humid days, and cool, dry days. For this kind of unpredictable weather, it’s important to have a variety of products on hand — keep your go-to lightweight moisturizers and thicker hydrating creams stocked so you can handle any skin surprises.
