My son was 2-and-half when he started day care. Although I got daily written and photographic updates, when I asked him about his day, he really never went into much detail. Before he was 3 years old, I realized there was a piece of his life that doesn’t involve me.
One of the realities of parenthood is that as our children grow, we may know less about the experiences that are shaping them and influencing their choices. One mom was smacked in the face with this realization when she found an alarming amount of cash in her teen son’s room.
‘Where did you get the money from?’ the mom asked.
In a video that has since gone viral, a mother confronts her son about finding thousands of dollars in cash. “I want to know why I’m cleaning your room and finding money like this,” she says to her son. “I need to know.
She reminds him that she gives him whatever he wants. Then she asks the question that really needed answers: “What are you doing? Where did you get the money from?”
Her son didn’t exactly give her a concrete answer. “I’m outside every day. I’m not going to school,” he says in the video. When she asks for clarification about his truancy, he doubles down. “Every dollar I ever made was outside. Ain’t no money at school.”
She said she was going to put the money in an account.
Seemingly in tears, the mom decides that she doesn’t want to go back and forth about the money. She told her son she was going to deposit the money in a certificate of deposit account, better known as a CD. “This is going into a certificate,” she says in the clip. “In about 10, 15 years, you’re gonna thank me for doing that.”
The boy says his mother was messing up his street cred. The video ends with him saying, “Ain’t nobody gonna be safe.”
The internet had a lot to say about this.
It’s scary stuff, considering what this young man may have been doing to earn this type of money as a teenager. When the clip found its way to YouTube, someone suggested the mother should put him out as he’s endangering both of their lives. Others said she was jealous the teen didn’t share his money with her. Some people questioned the validity of the video entirely.
Why would a mom show her son’s face on the internet if she believed he were involved in criminal activity? Either way, people online had a good time speculating how parents could and should handle this type of scenario.
