Once you have kids, your idea of what it’s like to be a parent will probably change. Sure, all of us would like to be happy all the time and be the super fun mom who lets her kids do whatever they want, but it’s just not realistic. For our children to grow up happy, healthy, and safe, we must establish some ground rules. And guess what? That’s totally OK.
Kayla Masse, who posts on TikTok as @kayla23ma, recently posted a video declaring she’s not a “fun mom,” and people loved it. A pregnant Masse explains in her video that she’s all about taking her three kids on summer adventures, but it’s not going to be relaxing for her. If they’re at the beach, she’s “counting heads.”
Masse explains that large groups of adults and kids are dangerous because everyone thinks someone else is watching the kids, but in the end, no one is. That is, of course, unless she’s around.
“If you thought I was ‘Go ahead and relax,’ far from it,” she admits with a laugh in the clip.

The mother of three boys, ages 3, 5, and 7, she told Today that she’s pretty particular about her kids, and if anything makes her uncomfortable, they’ll stay home. She’s happy to have other kids at her house for a playdate because she knows what will happen.
“If I hover, it’s fine, because you’re getting your kid back,” she assures her friends. Masse’s also not afraid to speak up if kids get out of line. “I am not going to the hospital today. You need to stop,” she will tell the kids.
“Some parents get offended if someone else steps in, but it’s necessary sometimes,” Masse told Today. “I appreciate it too, because sometimes my kids don’t listen to me.”
Many moms love Masse’s parenting style and have found themselves adopting similar approaches.
“’My job is to keep you safe’ is a phrase I tell myself throughout the entire day when I’m feeling guilty for being such a buzz kill,” a mom shared.
“Let me reframe this for you – you’re the safe mom. Water is not something to be messed with,” another person wrote.
One mom gave Masse the highest compliment.
“Respectfully Kayla. Your the only parent I’m sending my kids with. My kids get in the car and say ‘it was boring’ ‘she didn’t let us do this’ and I say good. You came back alive,” she wrote.
