When the show Kids Say the Darndest Things was on, people would react in joy, embarrassment, and sometimes abject horror. But none of that holds a candle to the weird things our Gen Z and Gen Alpha babies are spouting these days. The latest bizarre Gen Alpha slang that is rolling around is “start digging in your butt twin,” or the acronym SDIYBT if you come across it online.
Even though it is as weird as you’re probably thinking, it luckily isn’t as disgusting. According to Parents, SDIYBT originated from an edit a TikTok user made of a SpongeBob SquarePants episode and has since been edited over several different scenes.
So what does SDIYBT actually mean and should you be worried?
Although odd, the acronym is not overtly gross or hypersexual. One use could be that it is referencing “losing focus” when on a task like gaming. Another use is the implication that a person you are referencing is someone with “brain rot,” which implies someone is perpetually online and blindly adopts popular lingo. Essentially, it is saying that someone who says SDIYBT is actually mindless and just following a trend.
Most of the time, it really is just a nonsensical phrase kids are using to connect over a widely shared inside joke. People have done everything with the saying from stitching it over favorite cartoons to singing it to the tune of popular songs.
Teachers in particular are stressing about the saying. With school starting up, they are all collectively dreading hearing this phrase shouted at the most inopportune times throughout the day.
User @anqorman4teachers said, “SDIYBT is gonna be so awesome for this school year. I know I can’t wait to hear this,” along with the following explainer/rant video.
Others expressed how less-than-thrilled they were at the development. “This not funny. I was completely having a great day until I saw this,” joked one follower.
So really there is nothing more to do here than roll your eyes and hope the phase passes.
