Summer is one of the most fun times of the year — kids are out of school, the sun stays out later, the weather is warmer, and we get to enjoy more outdoor activities. Over the summer, we love spending time outside with friends and family. This is the season when families spend time at the beach, by the pool, at the park, and so much more. It can be incredibly fun, but there’s one thing we all need to watch out for: the sun’s harmful rays. While soaking up the sunshine feels good, it’s important to do so safely! Here are some tips for keeping your whole family protected from the sun this summer:
1. Wear sunscreen every day.

To protect your skin, it’s essential to wear sunscreen every day (not just on days with a lot of sun exposure). Look for non-irritating formulas that are comfortable for daily wear. For parents, we recommend the Mineral Crème SPF 30, which has a light, silky formula that provides a filter-like finish. For kids, we recommend the KidCrème SPF 50, an unscented and water-resistant sunscreen that’s easy to apply and silky smooth. Reapply sunscreen every two hours to keep your skin protected. For easy reapplication, consider a spray sunscreen, like the Quick Dry Body Spray SPF 40 or KidSpray SPF 40. We love MDSolarSciences Kid line because the products are safe for babies as young as 6 months and older.
2. Keep skin covered.

One way to protect your skin from the sun is to keep it covered with clothing. Wear long-sleeved shirts, pants, and wide-brimmed hats for the most protection — the more skin you cover, the better. Look for clothes with UPF (ultraviolet protection factor) for even more protection.
3. Stay in the shade.

When you’re spending time outside, try to stay away from direct sunlight. Trees, umbrellas, sun shades, and awnings can provide some protection from the sun. Keep in mind that shade isn’t perfect — some UV rays can still reach your skin — so make sure to use other sun protection as well.
4. Pay attention to window exposure.

We often don’t think about windows when it comes to sun exposure, but the sun’s rays can still get to us through glass — that’s why it’s so important to wear sunscreen every day. Make sure to use sunscreen or protective clothing if you’ll be spending a lot of time near a window (like in the car or at the office).
5. Check the time.

The sun is most intense between 10AM and 4PM, so be aware that you’ll need more protection during these hours.
6. Use makeup and skincare products with SPF.

There are a variety of multitasking products with SPF available, including the Daily Perfecting Moisturizer SPF 30, the MD Mineral BB Crème SPF 50, and the Tinted Lip Balm – SPF 30.
7. Be prepared.

Some days, you end up spending more time in the sun than expected, so keep sun protection in your car, purse, and diaper bag for easy access. The Solar Stick SPF 40 and KidStick SPF 40 are perfect for applying on-the-go.
